Almost a month on the truck and my blogs have been basic and not much information about the truck or the other explorers on the trip.
Truck life so far has been enjoyable despite a few set backs including a loan truck, due to legal rulings and laws within SA not allowing a British truck to operate within the Country, meant we spent two weeks on this truck, unfortunately this broke down which meant 20 of us spending a few days on a cramped mini bus.
Seeing the actual odyssey truck was a very joyous moment knowing that this was going to be home for the next 4 or so months.
The truck itself was bought as a Cab and flat bed all the frame and shell was purposely built by Odyssey, so a lot of thought and time went into building the truck so it was practical and it's very functional for its duties.
Truck layout is simple, storage at the back of truck for the main rucksacks, mattresses and sleeping bags.
Some of the seats are facing inwards, some forwards and there are 4 rows of seats positioned around 2 tables.
There are several roles and jobs to be done on the truck such as bag locker, tents and set up along with others, each person will be assigned to a job and it is their responsibility to keep on top of the jobs and make sure the trip runs as smoothly as possible.
There are also 5 cook groups, each group must complete a full day of cooking, if we have tea out, that cook group remains on duty until they have cooked tea.
Breakfast consists of cereals and sometimes egg baps or pancakes.
Lunch is normally a sandwich on the road side.
Dinner/Tea is normally a cooked meal, cooked on gas or over a fire.
As far as the group goes everyone has integrated well, no arguments as of yet, there is quite a difference in age within the group.
Ages range from 23 to 65 I think.
That's enough about truck life and the group back to the trip!
We arrived at our backpackers and within 10 minutes of locking the truck and getting to know backpackers and were we could set up tents.
We returned to truck to find out the truck had been broken into, some b******/b******s (this is me being nice) had climbed up forced 2 windows open and stole several days packs, cameras, laptops, US Dollars and several yellow fever certificates, total amount stolen must of been at least £3000!! Luckily none of my stuff was taken despite IPod being in clear view on the table.
I feel terrible for the people who have had things nicked!
Especially Dianne as a few days ago she had lost her camera now she has lost her laptop and money.
It is a real wake up call and we will all learn from this and will be extra cautious from now on!!
