Fort Ligonier was constructed in 1758 and operated for eight years as a garrison. The garrison has been painstaking reconstructed based on documentation from British archives. The garrison is bigger than it looks from the lower levels. It is constructed in multiple levels with the infirmary on the lowest levels, moving up to the battery where trenches and cannons were installed. The next level has mess, storehouse and barracks. There is also a powder magazine which is below ground. The stairs were not terribly long but vertical. It looked a bit dicey but I gave it a go. The ceilings are not very high but easy for me to clear. This section is the only area which contains a spot original to the fort. The museum includes artifacts found on the site during the reconstruction as well as items collected. My favorite thing to see were George Washington's pistols given to him in 1778 by Lafayette. Washington is believed to have carried the pistols to Valley Forge, Monmouth, Yorktown and during the Whiskey Rebellion when he was president. It is amazing the things that were kept and are available for us to see. I can't find my IPHONE cord that I just had last week.
