On the 30.10.11 we set off on our jungle trek, a songtaew (small minibus) picked us up at 9.30am. We had both packed our rucksacks (daypacks) with things they recommended us to take. There were 8 people on our trek. Our first destination was a butterfly and orchid farm just outside chiang mai. Before we even made it there Peter was being sick out of the side of the songtaew....Smart!!
The butterfly farm was pretty disappointing, as we only saw about two butterflies. RUBBISH!!
Next stop was a tribal longneck village, which was pretty interesting. We had photos taken with a couple of women who had eaten tobacco wrapped in leaves to make their teeth black as they thought it was more beauitful to have black teeth when smiling... I don't think sooooo!!
Dinner time and it was fried rice, was quite yummy actually, this was where we got dropped off to start our first 4hr trek in the jungle. It was peak time and felt really hot, hard work initially as it was literally all up hill. We kept stopping from time to time as our guide Nikki showed us different fruits, spiders and a bat cave. We had a 30 minute break in a hilltribe village where they made us a drink .. which was tea and coffee combined ...YUK!!
We carried along our way to eventually arrive where we were staying that night in another long neck village with pigs, chickens, dogs and cats roaming everywhere!! We all had a shower.. if you can even call it a shower.. we slept in a hut made of bamboo which didnt feel too safe when walking through it, just had mat and pillow to sleep on and a mosquito net to put over us.
Tea time we had chicken cooked on the fire by our friend in the picture ^ (luckily before he put that thing on his face)
After eating we got the drums, symbols, a recorder type thing and triangle out to sing and dance around the camp fire, we had sooo much fun.
The next day we woke up after not the best nights sleep, lots of funny noises coming from the jungle!! Nikki made us fried egg on toast. Then we set off on another trek, reaching our destination later that morning. Elephant camp! We got to wash the elephants, ride on them in the river bare back, and then we sat on a chair on their backs and went for a walk. Where they got fed bananas. Probably won't do it again as we felt it was slightly harsh on them.
We then did a zip line over the river which was fun, shame it was only 1 zip line!! We then went down river on bamboo rafts, which was nice and relaxing. Some people jumped in the river but we decided not too as we had seen a snake in there earlier!!
After lunch we set off on the hardest trek off all! We went up a mountain through the jungle, was very rough terrain and very steep. Was well worth it when we reached the top, spectacular sights. We were approx 1800m above sea level. We then had to carry on the trek to reach the jungle camp where we staying the night. Was a hard descent as both of us fell a couple of times!! ooops...
The jungle camp was very very basic.... We asked where the showers were? Nikki pointed at the river.... Smart!!
The toilets were what can only be described as 'minging'....
That night was halloween so we decided to tell scary stories around the camp fire, which turned out to be more hilarious than scary!!
But we survived!!
Eggs and toast on the breakfast menu again, only scrambled this time (unlucky Peter) haha!!!
Then we had a short trek to meet the songtaew, who took us to some waterfalls where we chilled out and had a swim for abit which was nice. We then made another short trip to the white water rafting site.
Life jackets and helmets on, paddles at the ready and off we went down river.... AWESOME!
Trip was finished now, just a 2hour drive back to town with 12 of us squeezed into the songtaew.... Uncomfy was not the word! Arrived back at the Little bird late afternoon...
WE HAD SURVIVED!!! ooouuussssshhhh
