In the morning we had around an hours drive to Adelaide, Lucy was driving... she doesn't like driving in the cities but she managed just fine with this one as Adelaide is straight forward to navigate around. We stayed at a caravan site on the edge of the city, within walking distance of the centre. The lady on reception wouldn't let us check in until 10.30am, even though there were spaces available, so we didn't wait around and left sherbie outside of reception and walked into the city.
We entered the city from the north end, seeing the lovely St Peters cathedral, right next to the cathedral was the Adelaide Oval ( one of the worlds most beautiful cricket grounds).. unfortunately it was under going major re-development, two stands were being re-built, including the Don Bradman stand. We didn't fancy paying for a tour as only half of the ground was standing, so we walked to the central market which is situated right in the centre of the city.... WOW! This market was amazing, no lie! if we weren't backpackers, we would of spent a fortune. We tried different cheeses, nuts and yoghurts. Lucy loved the chilli cashew nuts but found them quite expensive so resisted buying some. We bought some garlic pepperoni after trying a few different falvours, we thought it may be nice in our pasta dishes. We also purchased 2 tubs of yoghurts to share, one being a wild berry flavour and the other being a chocolate honeycomb... abit sickly after 2 large tubs!! The next thing we tried was duck terrine which was delicious, but unfortunately it was way too expensive.
After our adventure around the market we found a picnic bench in the city centre gardens and enjoyed our sausage butties and biscuits we had brought with us.... at this point we were stuffed! haha.
When we found some energy to carry on our walk around the city, we headed to the shopping area where Lucy bought some new earrings. We also visited haigh's chocolate shop... as we were too full we didn't purchase anything. After leaving the shopping area we walked past dozens of lovely bars and restaurants. Adelaide is a city for wining and dining.... which we love to do but with being on a budget this wasn't possible.
On the edge of the city we had a brief look in the botanical gardens... brief as it started raining. Heading back to the caravan site we stopped at a college to watch an aussie rules game to try to get a better idea of the sport, seeing as were going to a massive game at the MCG in Melbourne in a few days time. Still not understanding the sport fully we made our way back to the caravan site where we were finally allowed to check in. The rest of our day was abit dull as it didn't stop raining, we couldn't even cook at night so we drove to hungry jacks... hungry jacks being burger king!
In the morning we did some washing before driving through and out of the city towards the beaches of Glenelg. Here we had a walk along the promenade and pier before grabbing a hot chocolate to warm us up as it was so cold and windy outside.
Due to the not so good weather we decided not to hang around here for any longer and try to attempt to get to Melbourne for wednesday (ANZAC day) and the day of the big aussie rules match. With it being sunday and still the Great Ocean Road to enjoy we had a big afternoons drive towards Mount Gambier.... Peter underestimated the distance. We fueled up and saw a sign 'Mount Gambier 480km' .... ohh dear! It was already 1pm. We passed many vineyards in the pouring rain. Once the rain stopped, we discovered a rainbow brighter than any rainbow either of us had ever seen before. At one point there were 2 massive rainbows going over each other. At around 6pm we rolled into a camp site 30km past Mount Gambier, in the dark we cooked a quick tea... chicken noodles. We can drive long distances!
