After waking up in a camp site in the middle of nowhere, we drove to the next main town of Warrnambool where we got some milk and other essentials from Aldi. We were then able to enjoy our cereal whilst sat in the car park. Further down the road we began the great ocean road drive.... the first stop was an unexpected stop.... Cheese World!! Here we tried a number of different cheddars which were all pretty damn good. The pick of the bunch for us though, was the cracked balck pepper cheddar which we happily purchased along with some crackers.
When we finally made it to the coast, our next stop was the bay of islands. Even though it was a tad windy we had great views. We also bumped into a couple of other spaceships on route. After the bay of islands lookouts, we made our way to the Bay of Martyr and Grotto lookouts.... Lucy partically liked the Grotto, where we had a long walk down the steps towards the ocean. If you look at the photo's, this is the one with Lucy sat infront of the Grotto shaped rock! The next 2 stops were the London Bridge and the Arch which were both stunning to look at.
After having lunch in Port campbell where we enjoyed some of our newly purchased cheese, we made our way to Loch Ard Gorge. Here there were a number of views and lookouts, including views of a rock that looked like a razorblade and one that Peter called double dick!! Not quite sure whether that was its actually name... We also made our way down to the beach here which was lovely. After the beach we walked to thunder cave.... it actually sounded like thuder too as the waves crashed into the cave.... Peter thought there was actual thunder in the sky!
It was then onto the big attraction... the 12 apostles! Not that you can see all 12... It was very touristy here... full of coaches of Japanese & Chinese, always getting in the way! The views were fair spectacular though. Then it was time to find johanna beach camp site, which was in the Great Otway National Park. It rained and rained all night long... apparently the wettest part of Australia.
The following day, Lucy took the drivers seat for the second part of the Great ocean road. Our first stop was a lookout near Apollo Bay, we didn't spend long here as there were signs showing snakes! In Apollo Bay we visited the visitor information centre before grabbing a couple of hot chocolates. The weather was unfortunately abit miserable. Luckily as we headed north, the weather improved. We stopped at Kennett river.... and thankgod we did stop here.... Koala spotting time. We parked the car at the bottom of a lane and walked up with our heads arched looking up into the trees. 100 yards up the road... Peter made it 1-0 :-). We saw some adorable koalas iin the next 30 minutes. We even made pig noises to try to get the koalas attention, as they sleep for 19hours per day. You might wonder 'why pig noises?' Its because thats the kind of noises they make to communicate with other koalas. After our koala adventures, tour buses were coming up the lane, asking us where the koalas were... we did the tour guides job for them! Peter came out victorious, 5-3 winner.
Back on the road again, we stopped at the lovely seaside town of Lorne. Here we had a walk along the pier and had lunch next to the beach whilst watching people surf. From Lorne the roads were spectacular next to the ocean. We visited Split Lighthouse, Airey Inlet and the Great Ocean Road memorial before stopping at Anglesea Golf Course.... bet you are wondering, why a golf course??? Because this course is full of Kangaroo's jumping around which was hilarious to watch and a good way to finish the great ocean road and a fantastic couple of days :-D
