Waking up to the sound of cars and wagons zooming passed us as we slept next to the road. We decided it was time to move at about 8am, we had a couple of things to do like go shopping and find an ATM. After stocking up on chicken to last us the week we made our way out of Oamaru onto the coastal road towards Dunedin. There was a few places of interest for us to stop at before reaching Dunedin. The first one being the
moeraki boulders, which were basically big stone boulders in the sea. As the tide was coming in when we began to walk down the beach we had great fun trying to jump onto the boulders without getting wet. Lucy failed miserably by not being able to get on top of them.
The second point of interest was called Shag point. This is where we were told we would see seals and penguins and we saw loads of seals, big ones, medium size ones and babies. It was amazing to watch them all lying on the rocks and a couple of them were even on the grass. We spent quite a while watching them, felt good not having to pay a penny. We then had dinner in the campervan overlooking the beautiful coastline.
It was getting past 2pm before we reached Dunedin where we found a kiwi holiday park for us to stay on. This is where we had showers and washed clothes etc. We had a couple of ducks waddling around our campervan which we decided to feed with some bread even though there were signs around saying ' Do not feed the ducks.' For the next few hours Peter had two new best friends haha.
That night we whacked the heating on, watched some TV (for the first time in ages) and had a couple of beers. The TV in New Zealand is shocking by the way, they are watching Emmerdale, Eastenders and corrie from about a year ago.
After such a lovely day the heavens opened at night and did not stop raining all the way through the night. The following day it was still raining. We decided to visit the world's steepest street (Baldwin St) and of course walk up and down it. From the pictures it doesn't look very steep but i can assure you our calves were on fire near the top.
Our plan for the rest of the day was to drive round the Otago Penisular stopping for a couple of walks but that soon changed when we got there. It was far to wet and windy to do anything, so we left Dunedin and found a little spot next to the sea where we freedom camped.
