With our bodies relaxed and tingling all over we set off for Mount Cook. On the way we stopped at Lake Pukaki for dinner where we met fellow Apollo owners from Newcastle.
The views on the road towards Mount Cook were stunning, snow covered mountains with the lake beside. Before heading to the campsite we made our way to Tasman Glaciers. We set off walking at around 3pm, so it was only a short walk to the top of the lookout, about an hour. When reaching the top our words were 'wow.' Absolutely Amazing. Take a look at the pictures.
That night was very chilly with temperatures marginally above freezing and we didn't have any heating as we had no power. Peter went for a wee around 6am and was greeted by a white coating on everything.
When we got up we went on the hooker valley walk which took us 3 hours, reaching the hooker lake and returning. The lake was stunning with little icebergs floating in it, one iceberg broke in half whilst we were there. The awesome Mt Cook towered over the lake making it a beautiful landscape. We timed the walk perfectly as it started snowing again on our way back to camp. On route we also passed the impressive meullar lake and the alpine memorial.
We later left the Mount Cook national park and had a quick stop at Peters Lookout, then carried on driving south towards the small town of Twitzel. Alot of the Lord of the Rings films were filmed in this area apparently. The rest of the afternoon was spent driving across the Waitaka Valley Region, filled with rivers, lakes and a couple of dams. When we finally reached the town of Oamaru it was going dark and we wanted to freedom camp instead of paying at a caravan site, so we found out we could camp next to the racecourse for free... happy days!
