From our freedom camp next to the beach we drove south towards the Catlin Coast. Lucy was driving the campervan for the first time and did very well considering its 7.1m in length... just slightly bigger than her old beloved clio. When we arrived on the Catlins coast we drove through the surf town of Kaka Point before going to Nugget Point, 8km on a gravel road. This area had a very rugid coastline with stunning views. Nugget point was high up on the cliffs, from the car park we walked to the lighthouse. Along the track we could look down on a few seals lazying around on the rocks. The views from the lighthouse were impressive. Unfortunately we didn't see any penguins as they don't appear back on land until after 3pm each day.
After Nugget Point we drove along narrow lanes towards Cannibal Bay, where Peter took over the driving as the lanes got quite narrow and bendy. We came across sheep on the lane aswel which we found amusing. When we finally reached the beach, we walked along for several hundred metres before we came across what we had come here for.... A Sea Lion! We saw 3 of them whilst we were on the beach... we had been warned not to get too close as they can become aggressive and move quickly in short bursts, so we hung back a little... but the thought of being chased by a sea lion was hilarious.
We spent the rest of the day driving the scenic route down the coast and through the hills, stopping at a couple of look-outs in the process before finally arriving in the southernest city of Invercargill. Here we didn't do much apart from stay at the top10 holiday park where we treated ourselves to a bottle of moscatoooo and a few tiger beers, along with jacket potatoes served with chicken, cheese and beans :-D
