We arrived at yogyakarta train station at 4.50pm and we had a short walk to the backpacker area where we found a nice little place called Andrea Hotel. The room was quite small but nice and cosy. We decided to treat ourselves to our first indonesian beer, Bintang. Lucy's not the biggest fan of it but there doesn't seem to be much choice. After we were feeling abit hungry, so we went and ate at bedhot restaurant which was situated on the same alley as our hotel. We both choose pizza's which turned out to be delicious. We were quite tired so off to bed after our meal. No lie in though... as we got picked up from our hotel just before 5am, taking some toast with us. We were going on a trip to visit Borbudur and Prambanan. Borbudur is a 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist monument in Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia. The monument comprise six square platforms topped by three circular platforms, and is decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 buddha statues. A main dome, located at the center of the top platform, is surrounded by 72 Buddha statues seated inside perforated stupa. We arrived at Borobudur just before 6am. We had to hang around for a few minutes until they opened. They made us both wear these silly skirts, quite amusing really. Then we walked through some lovely gardens towards the monument. We asked a man if he could take a picture for us, asking if he could get us and Borobudur in the background.... think we asked the wrong person, the picture was awful but we've kept it as a laugh. We politely said thats good thankyou very much and walked away giggling to ourselves. We spent over an hour here looking around and taking photos. From near the top of Borobudur the views were really nice, a low mist hovering over the land with volcanos in the distance rising high above.
We stopped at a little cafe to have some food and drinks before jumping back into the minibus. Pancake with strawberry jam and sugar for Peter and a vegi omelette for Lucy. On the way to Prambanan we stopped at Mendut buddhist monistery for a quick look around there.
It was abit of a drive over to Prambanan from Borobudur, probably taking us around 1hour 30mins.
Prambanan is a 9th century Hindu temple compound in central Java, dedicated to the Trimurti, the expression of God as the Creator (Brahma), the Sustainer (Vishnu) and the Destroyer (Shiva). The temple, a UNSESCO world heritage site, is the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia, and is one of the largest Hindu temples in Southeast Asia. It is characterized by its tall and pointed architecture, typical of Hindu temple architecture, and by the towering 47m high central building inside a large complex of individual temples. One of the most majestic temples in the Southeast Asia.
Prambanan was quite stunning, we thought it was better than Angkor wat in someways... Think having less tourists around makes the experience abit better. Unfortunately we weren't allowed in the main area as it was under reconstruction after damage which had occured from an earthquake. The land around the area was also very nice like Borobudur. It was nice to walk around. We even spotted a snake cross the path infront of us, it was too quick for us to get a picture though. There were 3 other temples on the site but they weren't very good... 2 of them barely existed. We then thought about getting a drink before returning to our minibus. We entered an area where there must have been around 20-30 cafes all next to each other, all looking identical. Each one of them having a lady standing outside shouting out to us to come into their cafe. It was very annoying so we decided against having a drink which was quite amusing for us but not to the ladies. Then instead of a straightforward exit we had to work through loads of market stalls to get out, all trying to sell us souvenirs.... they don't seem to understand that we are backpackers and can't buy souvenirs all the time and carry them round with us until we return back to England in a few months time! After returning back to Yogyakarta we went and looked round a shopping centre and had a cheeky Mcd's. Before leaving the shopping centre we went to a coffee/doughnut shop... Lucy having a coffee and Peter obviously having a doughnut. When ordering the girl asked Lucy for her name so she could write it on the receipt, then they would bring our order over to us. Don't think the girl understood Lucy and the receipt read Miss Pink... Lucy was wearing her pink raincoat. We found it funny :). We spent the rest of the evening doing nothing basically.
