Peter & Lucys world adventure
This blog is from Gili Air, not Pemenang... but google maps could not locate the island, so Pemenang is the nearest place is would locate...
After 1 hour 15 minutes on the fast boat we arrived on the island of Gili Air around lunch time. Even though the island is tiny we managed to walk the longest way round to finally reach a group of homestays... we ended up choosing a nice family run place called Abdi Fantastik. Our bungalow, located in a garden with sea views was very nice with a big hammock on the porch. On Gili Air there isn't any motorized transport... you either walk, cycle or get a horse drawn cart. After a freshen up in our outdoor bathroom we headed out for a bite to eat. We found a cheap little restaurant just down the east coast from our bungalow. Lucy ordered a jacket potato with tuna.... when the food came it turns out Lucy got 3... yes 3 jacket potatoes!! On Gili Air there isn't much to do apart from relax and have a massive chill out. So we spent that afternoon doing exactly that on our porch in the hammock. We got very familiar with the game hearts. Later that evening we enjoyed a few beers, a nice tea consisting of a calzone pizza for Peter and a vegetable noodle curry for Lucy. The bintang beers did go down nicely. Also the restaurant provided us with free prawn crackers and fresh fruit... Lucy did destroy the prawn crackers before we had even ordered our drinks!
In the morning Lucy went to the toilet to find a dead gecko on the floor, we think it might have burnt it self on our mosquito coil. Poor little thing. All morning it rained with occasional thunder and lightening so we didn't do much apart from chill on our porch. Breakfast was included at our homestay but wasn't anything spectacular. It finally faired up around lunch time, so we had abit of a walk out. While we were out we grabbed some lunch from the same restaurant as the day before.... this time Lucy was very disappointed with her meal. She ordered special noodle but got noodle soup instead and it was rank!! Later we went to a bar called chill out bar where we had a drink and still being abit hungry we shared a cheese sandwich with chips. The rest of the day involved relaxing on the hammock, drinking bintang and having pizza, chips & a burger (which was obviously processed)...
The following morning we woke up to sunshine... we thought, great! Whilst getting ready the heavens opened and it chucked it down. Bloody brilliant. The weather can change in minutes. Fortunately the clouds didn't stay around long, so we hired bicycles. We cycled all the way round the island. In places it was quite hard pedalling on the sandy tracks. Before we knew it we had nearly gone round the whole island, not taking very long at all so we stopped and had a drink at a bar on the north east coast. We later ate at chill out bar and enjoyed some more beers. For a change we spent the evening relaxing on our porch. It felt well good to just relax and do absolutely nothing.
Next day we hired a snorkel and went down to the chill out bar as it had a good snorkelling area just off the beach there. As we only hired one snorkel we took it in turns to go in the water. Within 5 minutes of being in the water a lad shouted over to Peter 'TURTLE'.... Peter and this other lad swam with the turtle for around 10-15 minutes. This turtle was in no rush at all, so Peter got a good look at this one. Even watching the turtle poke his head out off the water for air. Unfortunately Lucy didn't see any turtles when she went into the water. After lunch and a couple of beers we tried some more snorkelling but a combination off beer and a strong current in the sea didn't make it too enjoyable. For lunch Lucy ordered a tuna mayo sandwich for the second day running... and for the second day in a row they didn't make the correct dish. Don't think they understand a tuna mayo sandwich in the kitchen at the chill out bar.
We relaxed for the rest off the day and returned to have tea at the chill out bar. We did spend alot of time at this particular bar but it was definitely the best one for its price and quality. This was our last evening on the island as the next day we left on the fast boat back to Bali............
We know this isn't the most exciting blog in the world.... but Gili Air is a very good place to forget about the problems off the world and RELAX!!
