Hello from Oxford, my new home!
Today is Tuesday, but we arrived here on Sunday so I will start from there! We left for Oxford from the stansted airport on Sunday morning...it was a LONG and boring 3 hr bus ride. When we finally arrived we dropped off our bags and checked out our rooms. Ryan and I are in the same dorm building (number 19) me and one other girl are the only girls over there! We have our own bedrooms with a twin bed, dresser, closet, and windows (very big and much better than i expected!) then we have a shared bathroom with one other person with a toilet and shower. It is a lot nicer than the dorms at UNL! Each building is set up different though, some ppl share bathrooms with more than one person and their rooms are smaller, so we lucked out!
After checking out our rooms we went and walked around Oxford for a bit which was FULL of people! We found these things called cornish pastries....it tasted kind of like a runza!! so that was nice and I imagine we will be visiting it QUITE OFTEN!
We all met up at the orientation and met the professors and student assistants...they are so cool! They are very funny and nice! They had all of our names memorized when we got there so it is TEN TIMES more personal than it is at home! Then we had a banquet dinner and got to know each other. After that we went to a local pub with the professors! It was a lot of fun...the beer was different...but we'll get used to it! The professors are hilarious and really easy to talk to. There are four student assistants that help organize and plan the sports, cultural things, excursions, and nightlife. They are all girls about our age and actual students at Oxford.
Monday was the first day of class. Before class we had breakfast at 8:15 in the dining hall. The dining hall is kind of harry potterish, it consists of three really long tables with benches on each side and seats about 100 people. Breakfast was buffet style and oh so yummy! Eggs taste so good! Everywhere else we ate sandwiches for breakfast so fruit, toast, and cereal are a treat! Class starts at 9 am every morning. The first class is Political History of Great Britain since 1945. I really like this class! Dr. Holmes is the teacher and he is sooooo fun to listen to! He lectures, we take notes, ask questions, and laugh at his jokes! Then we have a 30 minute break before our next class, Internatiol Economics. The second class is much more technical. It is okay....but I like the first one better! He lectures, we draw graphs, I ask Ryan to explain things to me (he gets the graphs WAY better than me!), and we laugh at his jokes, too!
Then it is time for lunch. We eat in the same dining hall in a buffet style. So far we have had salad and fruit, potatos, some type of veggie, and either lamb or chicken....LOTS of lamb! After lunch our afternoons are free until dinner at 6:30. Dinner is more formal, we all sit in the dining room and the staff SERVES us our three course meal....awwww i can get use to that! The desserts have been sooooo good!
Monday after lunch Kelly and I went shopping....Last summer was the warmest summer in Oxford on record so we decided to pack for that...basically a Nebraska summer....unfortunately it is so COLD and rainy here! I had to get some new jeans, and a jacket, some shoes (all I brought were flip flops!)...so I think for Christmas maybe you all could wrap up my credit card bills with a payment.....I didn't really budget in buying fall clothes! Nonetheless, I have never been one to gripe about shopping! The stores are really cool here too! Monday night we all went to a play, Bedroom Farce. It was a comedy and really enjoyable! After that we went to the pub that is in our college and had a few drinks with everyone. Then the Oxford girls wanted to take us all to a club....so we danced the night away! It was a blast! There was a pole.....so everyone had some....interesting?.... moves! Basically the best way to get to know 70 other people is to give them a few beers and a dance floor with lights, music, and a pole! Great fun!
After the club we walked home and after passing the second street vendor we broke down and bought donor kebabs (basically gyros....greasey lamb with lots of toppings in a pita) It tasted great at night.....but not so great the next morning! I stayed in Kelly's room with her, since her roommate is gone still and we get lonely!
Tuesday morning we were all NOT so excited for class....but we went, took our notes, giggled, and scarfed down more lamb at lunch! This afternoon we just kind of walked around Oxford a bit until dinner.....lamb and chocolate cake...which Ryan loved!
Tonight we are getting on the internet, doing some laundry and then going out to the pub a little bit later....We've gone out every night so far...but you only get this chance once right!
I bought another wedding magazine today! Kelly and I are looking forward to going through it....Ryan bought a golf magazine...he is going to start researchign and see which courses around here are the most reasonable and try and get a group of guys together to go golf...should be fun!
Tomorrow we are going on a walking tour of Oxford with the girls... I'll let you all know how it goes!
I have a phone card now! Ryan and I will try and call soon!
Have fun...e-mail us....we get bored during the afternoons sometimes!
xoxo
