HI guys
I've got some terrible news. Yesterday, only 1 day after all international staff arrived, we had a death at camp. Yesterday morning at 6:30am a guy called Nik, a 19y.o. pro waterpolo player from the netherlands went for a swim on his own down at the pool. the pool was officially closed and no life gurads were on duty. After breakfast the pool staff made their way down to the pool to begin training and found him submerged in the deepest part of the pool. James Boyer and another pool bloke from Brisbane- Superman, pulled him from the pool and attempted to resuscitate him. An ambulance was called and paramedics continued to try and revive him but unfortunately he was announced dead at jennersville Hospital. The camp was and still is in shock and it's all a bit weird as he was travelling on his own and no one really had a chance to get to know him very well. I had a conversation with him the night before and it's incredibly eerie to know he's not alive today. Jaymes was the last person to see him after saying good morning to him before Nik went for a swim. No one was really sure whether or not to continue activities for the day, which included a swim that afternoon, but we did. Jay the owner made a terrible attempt to address the issue at dinner, by firstly getting the Nik's name wrong and then also claiming he was form New York, no one was very impressed. We have been told since that Nik was a epileptic and suffered a fit whilst swimming. Hopefully things will improve for the summer, so far there has been 3 accidents- a testicle injury, a bloke needed stitches on a leg the other day and now a death. The worst thing is the owner seems mostly concerned about covering his arse with the insurance side of things.
In other news, all the staff have arrived and there aren't nearly as many americans as expected. There's only 1 american in the junior boys division, so we're not really sure who we're going to mooch off after camp cause everyone is international.
MIss you all guys,
luv mike
