Hey guys,
Everyone (counsellors that is) is about to arrive so I thought I'd get one last blog in before the computer rooms become too chockers.
I've had a pretty eventful week really. We started off the week with the biggest injury in camp to date with Miguel (our mexican room mate) injuring his little swimmers after being knee-ed in the region. There was significant swelling and he spent the night in hospital, and then received day surgery before returning to camp. Dad was kind enough to give some advice when I called him about it, I bet he thought i'd been arrested or soemthing after getting an urgent call at work from me. Unfortnuately Miguel now has to go home as he's incapacitated for 6weeks and won't be able to work maintenance and the poor b***** is devastated. The owner of the knee in question was also pretty down about the accident.
We've had a lot of new people coming too, more hungarian people than you can poke a stick at (most work in the kitchen) and also another few kiwis and a pommy chick. The main batch of international staff arrive tomorrow (monday), for orientation week this week. I think the Yankee staff come on Tuesday.
As you know we had the excitement of the last Sag-tas Open which was a huge honour to take out. I'm not sure whether it has translated how much build up and hype now surrounds the comp but with so little to really do here it became a pretty big thing.
The BEST thing (i sound like a 8y.o at show and tell) would undoubtedly be the Metro excursion I was able to do yesterday with my Cheif Navigator Jamie the Kiwi. I'm not sure whether you realise (i sure as hell didn't) but the kids bring quite a bit of luggage...actually think of moving house and you'd be close. So prior to camp starting, the camp organises to pick up all the kids baggage at a local shopping centre or something and truck it back to camp, ready for when the kids arrive. We even put them into the bunks (and unpack them for the little kids) talk about service. So I was the driver of a 15" truck with jamie as my navigator as we went to pick up bags from Harrisburg, which is about 2hrs Nth Wst from Camp. Before you ask....yes we got lost....only because the directions are wrong and we were only 10mins late!! We did however get to see a beautiful bridge and river as we started heading to Gettysburg (not in the right direction).
We saw quite a lot of the countryside which is semi-rural and man they have some weird signs around. We saw "Christ's Home Office", Paradise the town, The national Christmas Centre, "Armish stuff etc..", "Warning aggressive drivers in this area" and "deaf children area". only in America. It was a great way to spend the day driving round, meeting a few people and basically just getting out of camp. We had lunch at Applebees on the way back, which is slightly classier than a diner but nothing special. The Salad was HUGE though and the mozarella sticks were to die for, something we definitely need back in Aus.
Today we've spent hours delivering the bags from the Gym to individual cabins while 4 blokes are out in trucks doing pick ups from Baltimore and Washington DC. Latest News on them was one truck was rear-ended, so there a bit of excitement about that.
Well that about brings everyone up to speed I think, things will be changing very shortly and it won't be quite so peaceful but it will be great to meet new people and break the boredom a bit. keep me updated on the latest becuase we get absolutely NO news and we don't spend time watching TV so let me know what's going on! e.g China quake stuff, State of Origin, Burma, Olympics stuff etc.
