23rd - 24th September
Today we got picked up at 7:45 in an ex army truck (it was like a 4x4 lorry) and got taken down to the ferry terminal to catch a ferry to Fraser Island - Fraser Island is situated just off the south Queensland coast opposite Hervey Bay and took about 50mins to reach.
When we arrived on the island, it was clear straight away why we would need such a large truck as the whole island is made up of sand. We spent the day visiting various sights on the island and travelling down the highway on the island - this was a 75 mille long beach. The sights included the Marino shipwreck, coloured sands, Eli Creek and Indian Head. Indian head was a look out which looked over the whole island and the views were beautiful. It also looked out over the sea and at the bottom of the cliff (which people were standing way too close to for my liking) were small sharks, fish, a turtle, dolphins and in the distance we could see whales splashing around. The bus we were travelling on got stuck in the sand so we spent ages at the lookout while the driver dug us out (just in time for the tide coming in).
That night we stayed in tents, but they had proper beds and a woodern floor so it was a bit more glamourous than normal camping. In the night though Michelle had to go to the toilet - Fraser island is well known for having wild dingos on the island which can be very aggresive (a little boy was killed by one) so wasnt happy about going in the pitch black to find the toilets. Luckily she didnt get eaten alive and made it back safetly (yes she did go on her own!).
The next day we carried on back down 75mile beach and went on a walk through the rainforest and then went swimming in a Lake which had crystal clear water. It was really cold but the driver said the lake had eucalyptus and tea tree and is meant to moisturise your skin so everyone in the bus dived in and rubbed the silica sand on them to exfoliate - whilst they were shivering.
We had a really good time on the Fraser Island trip and were sad to leave. We got back to the campsite around 5:30pm and decided to drive to Noosa Heads rather than spend another night at Hervey Bay. When we arrived it was dark and we couldnt find a campsite. After driving around for about an hour getting lost we found a campsite that was full. We were too tired to drive so we slept on the street outside the campsite. This was scary as Michelle thought we`d get in trouble but it worked out ok and we got up really early to move. That day we went shopping, to the cinema and then set off towards Australia Zoo, so we would be near by and could get there for it opening.
