Having not had enough of buses on our trip yesterday, we are booked on another today! Its only a half day though, easy. We leave at 9am with Herta from Austria (speaking 5 languages) as our guide. We head to Hadrian's villa about 30 minutes away. It's super hot, in case you've forgotten. Hadrian was emperor between 115 and 138A.D. He was a peaceful emporer who loved to travel and did so extensively in the world, and who chose to live in the country for the fresh air and to be close to nature.
He didnt marry for love but rather married to keep power and money in the family. His true love was another man, Antonius and they travelled extensively together. He also loved orgies but his lover did not and drowned himself in the Nile. Hadrian had lots of statues of Antonius made after this, but died himself 4 years later.
The villa was ruins and was vast, Hadrian had lots of copies of things he had seen on his travels, like a pool he copied from Greece.
then we travelled to Tivoli to see Vila D'Este, which had the most amazing fountains and garden from the 15th century, all the plumbing worked using gravity and the amazing still water supply around this area. It was truly beautiful.
