So after the movie, I take the nice sleeping pills that two nights previously had me stumbling around like a drunken sailor, complete with swearing, and tossing my cookies in the bathroom. Not a nice reaction to the meds. However, I was trying to stay vertical and pack things at the time. This time I chose to remain seated and wrapped in a blanket with an air sickness bag in my hand, just in case it wasn't a fluke thing. Some nine hours later I awake refreshed, to sunlight out the window and decide to check out the Australian entertainment. So I watch the film December Boys, I liked it but isn't for everyone. I also watched How Australians got their accents which was very funny as well as educationaland narrated by John Clark with a wicked dry sense of humor. I had just enough time to get half way through the classic Strictly Ballroom (an absolute favorite of mine) before we were cut off for landing in Melbourne.
Managed Immigration and Customs in record time. I actually waited longer for my luggage than in line for both. Peter was the second face I saw in coming through the doors from Customs. But then it is hard to miss a 6 foot 5 inch Aussie. I really can't say who was more excited to see the other. Peter has become one of my dearest friends and mates and I have Curtis to blame for bringing us together. So we spent and hour in the airport lobby talking, relaxing, visiting and generally being happy in each other's company again. So we finally made our way to the shuttles that would take us into town and finally to the neat little hotel, The Sommerset Gordon Heights Apartments.
So after I got settled a bit, Peter left to go home and change as we are going to Priscilla Queen of the Desert tonight, my first night in Australia. I can't think of a better way to start.
6:00 p.m. Melbourne time and we are going to the Three Gorges for dinner prior to the movie. Sticker shock sets in. Dinner for one is $17.90 Australian Dollars (about $20 American)for a simple, but very good, Chinese dinner of cashew chicken, lettuce wrapand soup. A very nice bottle of wine to celebrate my first night, made it truly lovely. If you all haven't tried Aussie wines, get your bums to the local wine shop. You don't know what you are missing!
We walk to the theater and are greeted by a gian silver high heel shoe atop the theater marquee. It's perfect. I will be posting pictures as soon as I download them from my camera. The musical is awesome! It lacks the Abba songs from the movie, apparently a licesening thing, but the staging is truly amazing. Peter and I were singing songs along with the cast as most were 80's pop songs. We made an early night of it as tomorrow we are going on a steam train, winery and wildlife sanctuary tour.
