Happy Labour day to everyone at home. Hope you enjoy your day off. We are back on the bus and visited the town of Perge where we saw the best preserved Roman Baths in Turkey and also with a lot of imagination the nicest shopping street in Ancient times.
Next stop is Aspendos Archaeological site. This has the best preserved Greco Roman theatre we will see in this trip and it is still very much in original condition with very little reconstruction .
Still hot today but showers are forecast this afternoon, which is lucky because we have a 4 hour drive after lunch to get to Konya, where we will spend tonight.
The drive is over the mountains . In the winter time these mountains are covered with snow. It has started to rain quite heavily now and the roads are steep and slippery. This has slowed our normally speeding driver right down. The temperature has also plummeted to 15C.
This area is the home of brown bears, wolves, snakes and gypsies.
I don't expect we will see any of the animals with the rain about but we have seen the gypsies settlements and the shepherds tending their goat herds.
The way of life for the people away from the cities is quite simple and in some cases still a bit primitive with their stone huts and the manual harvesting of crops. Not too many mod cons out here.
Konya is the 6th biggest city in Turkey and it is one of the most conservative cities in Turkey.
This afternoon we have been hearing a talk on Islam, the religion and Islam the way of life. Most interesting subject and very complex.
To be continued.....
