MP's Travels
So sorry it's been a while since my last update... But here it goes.
Monday the 3rd:
We went to Walmart, which was an interesting experience. When we showed up we started to take some pictures and this police man came up and told us that we couldn't take pictures. And he wasn't nice about it either, we kind of just acted like we didn't really know what he was talking about and then went into Walmart. You have to walk through this security thing before you can enter the store, and you have to put your bag into a secure bag that they lock so you can't shoplift... interesting idea... then when you get up to the cash register they open up the bag for you. Just to spite them I took a picture from the back of the cab to proove that I had in fact been to walmart. It's a little fuzzy but you can see it well enough I think.
Tuesday July 4th:
Today I went to class, and then we all went home to change. I met Lori a little before dinner time and we took the subway to the other side of the city (or so it seemed) and walked like 10 or 15 blocks to get to the Hard Rock Cafe!! It was the first time I'd ever eaten at a hard rock cafe and I thought it was pretty cool. I ate a cobb salad, I know... I'm adventurous! And had a few drinks. Took a couple pictures but I didn't want to seem so touristy so I kept the camera tucked away until the end of the meal. Then Laurie and I shared a cab home and I went to sleep!
Wednesday July 5th:
Nothing much today besides going to class. After school Lori and I walked Cabildo avenue and popped our heads into a few shops to look around. Shoes here are way cheap and I'm trying hard to control myself!! Afterwards we just went our seperate ways and I went home to read. Just a relaxed day which was good, but I needed it. I finished reading my book by the way, and now I have to see if I can find another english book to read. If anyone cares, I just finished reading "The Devil Wears Prada" and I really liked it :)
Thursday July 6th:
After classes today we all went to the Plaza de Mayo and had to be there before 3.30 in the afternoon so we could see the mothers. If this doesn't make sense then I'll eplain it. Back in the 1970's the army or the government apparently kidnapped a bunch of men (who at that time were just kids I guess) and either tortured and killed them, or just kidnapped them and did other stuff to them, and never told the families where their kids were. So in the 30 years that have passed every thursday the mothers grandmothers of these kids march around in a circle in protest... They still have no idea where they are.
After that, we walked over the the center of town where the obelisc is and just did some sight seeing and also went to the Teatro Colon to see when the tours were. Drew, christina and I then went to have a coffee together and then went back to the obelisc to see it at night. It was pretty cool until this kid walked up to us and attempted, although unsuccessfully, to take our things by telling us in spanish to pass him everything and not scream. We laughed and carefully, but quickly, got back onto the subway to go home!
Also, someone went crazy today and shot people on the street... just thought I'd throw that in there.
Friday July 7th:
We were going to go to the tango class but decided not to go last minute. Instead we went back around the obelisc and at dinner and just wandered around for a while. Kind of boring, but sometimes it's nice to just have a relaxed time :)
Saturday July 8th:
We woke up mildly early and went to take a tour of the teatro colon, which is one of the top 3 theaters in the world! It was so amazing, and we were there when the orchestra was rehersing to play for the president of argentina and it was AMAZING... It was almost acoustically perfect, they didn't even need to use microphones! And people were telling me the auditorium at richland high was good, you whould have been here with me! We were only allowed to take pictures in the front of the theater, but I have to just say that I wish you could have all seen it.
After the Teatro Colon, we took the bus to La Boca, which is a small part of town near the river that smells like... ass, as brad would say :) We walked all around and took pictures and were all touristy because everyone that goes there is a tourist! Then we got on a bus and went to go have coffee at a cafe Havanna which was nearly robbed while we were there. Incident number 3... I'm starting to get scared lol. I've also acquired a nice cold as a souvineer... I feel like crap by the way. Oh well... I went to bed at like 8:30 in hopes that I'd start to feel better.
Sunday July 9th:
Woke up early, kind of, and met some of the people from my group to go to the Feria de Matadores, which is like a huge craft market, reminiscent of the saturday market in portland, and pikes place in seattle... only like everything is cheap. I bought quite a few souvineers for people and was pretty excited that I didn't spend all that much money. Yay for me!
Now I'm just sitting here updating my journal so you all don't think I've forgotten about you. I'm starting to miss everyone and am getting anxious to come home. Only 2 more weeks. This coming up saturday we're going to go to colonia uraguay for a day, and for only $45US I can't really pass it up. when will I ever be in south america again?
Okay, so I just uploaded some pictures. I'm going to put up the La Boca and the Teatro Colon pictures later cause I need to get going. I will also put up two rather fun pictures of us at Iguassü falls in the next few days.
Miss you all..... leave comments.
