Milene in Africa
Last day at school. The kids had just finished their exams and the school was being cleaned and getting a good tidy-up before closing. We joined the teachers and the students for a closing assembly. The children presented a few songs and a drama about HIV and what happened if you don't finish school. It was cool, a good opportunity for us to get to know a little bit more about the children and the school. During the assembly the head teacher thanked us for all the things we help with (uniforms, exams, books, medicine) and I did a little speech that got us all crying. It feels like it was only yesterday when we first came in and met everyone, but a whole month has gone by. A typical day at school will start at 7:40 or 8:00, we would teach maybe 3 or 4 classes (30 minutes each), join the teachers for tea break and have lunch around 12. After that everyone goes to the church for a 40 minute service. The kids get back and do a clean up and classes start again for 2:20, finishing by 3:30. After that the kids have some free time for games and sports. They are back in the classroom for 4:30 until later, these are optional extra classes and we did not take part. It's just that now we got used to the routine and it's going to be tough living without those happy smiley faces : )
