Blimey, this badboy is getting less and less appealing by the day it's 6:40am and i set off from Bangkok just under 13 hours ago heading to the Thai Island of Koh Samui.I've got to wait another hour before my boat which will take another 6/7 hours....not much fun when you only managed to get about an hour sleep on the bus which will rock up and we have no accommodation sorted L.
Anywayz the bus from phnom to siem reap was run of the mill and only took 5 hours, a sweaty 5 hours but it was a short journey by our means.Siem Reap was a lot smaller than phnom penh and seemed to be all directed in one area which is always good.Siem Reap is built basically for people visiting Angkor Wat so its quite commercialised towards westerners which we like because we know full well there should be pubs and bars with actual travellers in and not old men looking for wives. When we got off the bus at the companies office we were given a free tuktuk ride to our hotel which was this time booked and so me, dan, and 2 other girls climbed in the smallest tuktuk ever.Luckily it was only a 5 minute ride but it turned into an overload of our own which was funny.I'd of loved a picture!
At the hotel we had been wrongly upgraded for free to a triple double(6 berth) air con room, so no complaints there and i enjoyed my first double bed unspoilt by Dan of the trip! We arramged a tuktuk driver for the Angkor Wat trip the next morning and asked where the bars were. The problem we have found with other places is that if there is the slightest bit of nightlife then it was so spread out you couldn't get there very easily or no-one knew about it leaving it with no atmosphere and just a few people sat around. Here we welcomed 'Pub Street'.As the name suggests a street full of pubs, restaurants, bars and clubs all along the same road and when its set up like this everyone is in the same place and suddenly you have a big night on your hands. It was our first BIG night out since Vang Vieng but can't be compared to anything we experienced there but we enjoyed a less eventful but decent night none the less.
Our tuktuk was booked for 10am to visit Angkor wat so Dan woke me up 10mins before.Nice 1 Dan, you get to shower and freshen up whilst i don't even get to brush me choppers.Angkor wat was $20 for a day pass which for Cambodia is bloody expensive but i'll only go once and thats all we went Cambodia for anyway. Was it worth the $20, probably but then again we have seen so many temples, palaces and wat's that there are only so many you can look at before you get a little tired of seeing them. They were impressive still and even after over 1,000 years you could still see all the carvings and details on the walls.I don't know any facts about the place but its HUGE.People were walking around with 7 Day passes (people with no girlfriends and enjoy watching time team) and it just goes on forever. To think they were built with nothing more than a load of men and a hammer n chisel is crazy and it must of taken years to carve out.Being heavily hungover we didn't really appreciate it that much and got to the point where we just walked around and headed straight back to the tuktuk before taking us to the next place. My favourite bits were the huuuuge Angkor Wat and 1 of the surrounding wat's that over time has got trees growing on the roof's and walls of the temples. You can see what i mean from some of my pictures but there are quite a few famous photography pictures of it i'm sure google can dig out.
After Angkor Watt we headed back and went for a quick sleep that ended up turning into a 4 hour kip.I seemed to sleep for ages but when i woke up i remembered our passports were meant to be delivered at 4pm (now being 8pm) so i popped down to reception where they weren't to be seen.Originally when i got to the hotel i made a fuss and got the reception to ring this guy to confirm everything was okay and all seemed to be in order explaining i could pick it up from the office at 1pm or have it delivered for 4pm.Rather than spend money on a tuktuk we decided to get it dropped off as that was the original agreement. So when it wasn't there at 8pm panic set in and i got them to ring again.Same thing again, everything was fine and they were at the office in Siem Reap and they could get dropped off at 6am in the morning. We went with that in the hope that even with our bus being at 12 we could still go and pick them up from the office and cause a massive uproar over there. So we headed out for a few quiet unsociable drinks and went back to the room around 11:30pm as Dan was blocked up top and bottom he claimed.
When i woke up i got dressed quickly and went to check for our passports. After 5 mins of confusion, worry and panic the girl who had made the calls a few times turned up and handed over our passports complete with the 60 day thai visa we wanted, phew!I don't think i've ever been more pleased to see it before but we were good to go.Reception asked me how much we payed ($17) as they could of organised it for us but i think we got a reasonable price from their reaction and plus we didn't know they could of sorted it and time wasn't on our side.I asked the guy how they get it done so quickly with their being no official express service and whether it was back-handers or not and he just replied "yes black money. We call our friend at the embassy and he gets it sorted for you".As we suspected and at that price they must make a killing and may explain why there are a few hummer's, Mercedes and BMW's floating around.
Now we had our passports it was all about getting to Bangkok and our bus was booked for 12 to take us to Poipet (border crossing).Turned out it wasn't actually a bus for the first half and infact was a taxi.No one decided to tell any of us and there was a little bit of a panic when we were driving for 2 hours in a taxi in a direction we had no idea about. There were 5 other tourists in this taxi, Me Dan 2 Aussies girls and a Chinese girl.I was on the ball though and jumped in the front seat leaving Dan sandwiched between the 3 girls in a sweaty taxi :D ah well.Everyone seemed to sleep the 2nd half of the taxi bar me and Dan.I was nice and comfy, so I was fine but everyone in the back was squashed and the 3 girls went to sleep. When i turned around to look at Dan it was like looking at a giant meerkat with 3 girls sleeping on his shoulders lol, I think he secretly enjoyed it (the blonde aussie shoulder anyway) but it was funny to watch from the air conditioned front seat.
At Poipet the Thai border we were kicked out the taxi where he drove off leaving us with no clue what to do.We figured from previous experience to go through departures and immigration by following everyone else but we still had no clue where this bus was we were meant to get.Turned out the guy was waiting for us but no one tells you how the 'bus' works so your in no mans land for a good while. The Chinese girl in our taxi had shot off through immigration and we never saw her again lol.We joked about how we would probably drive past her on the way to Bangkok a further 3 hours away.Although we waited 2 hours to get everyone on our bus and maybe thought she had figured walking would be faster....
We arrived in Bangkok in rush hour and at times it was a stand still taking a good hour to get to Koh San Road.It seemed to just take forever but i'm glad we knew a place to stay and how to get there. The 2 Aussie girls came with us and stayed in the same place as it was cheaper than there last accommodation and wanted to save a bit of dollar as it was their last leg of their trip. After a shower and change of underpants we met back up with them and went out for some food before they both headed back to get some sleep.Me and Dan had missed the Chang though and after a couple we were both well up for a big night out again so we headed down Koh San Road stopping at a few bars and finally ending up at The Club where we spent our very first night. Its a good club but the drinks are expensive so we shared a beer bucket.A mix of 3 different beers with a load of ice, sound nice?Well its proper dirt, but atleast you don't look a k*** without a drink.
Our first full day back in Bangkok was spent at the MBK where we had been before but this time with a shopping list. The list was as the following:
·Socks (important as i have 2.5 socks left that were dirty)
·2 T-Shirts (as i'd thrown 3 away i took with me)
·Shorts
·Hair Gel
·Gay Shirt for Dan (for the FMP we wanted to buy each other the most ridiculous shirt there was)
·Flip Flops (lost mine in vang vieng doing a backflip in the river)
I got most of it excluding the gay shirt for Dan.We found some but it was a decent make apparently and was going to cost £17 rather than the <£5 we had hoped.I bought a necklace and some board shorts that i hadn't intended, o and some fisherman shorts as they are called that basically look like clown trousers until you tie them up.I also got my hair cut, now i could of held on another week or so but Dan was desperate and it seemed a legit place to go.For £3.60 it was quite the experience and with no wait at all we were ushered over to the corner where we had our hair washed and shampoo'd before being taken to have it cut.I did try and explain to him how i have it but i thought because he see's and cuts hair everyday he should be able to recognise where its longer and where its not....not that hard.I seemed to have come away with a pony-tail style hair cut now but it'll grow out or i'll just butcher it off.Dan picked his out the book which i should probably have done and gone for a change but ah well.Once cut we had another wash and shampoo, blow dry and gel'd (sort of).Not bad if you get it cut how you like. This is after all the biggest shopping centre i've ever been too and was a big company in there.
Later that evening we just chilled in a few bars and went in The Club to see if anything was cracking off, it wasn't, so we left after a Chang. We knew we had a stupidly long bus ride the day after and wanted to actually do something during the day so we set our alarms for 9.
A few snooze's later we got up at 10 and got a tuktuk to the Dusit Zoo.It's a bit like any other zoo but nicer and a bit bigger to your standard Twycross and had some things in there i hadn't seen before.I think i may of taken more pictures there than a Japanese tourist.I had a cornetto ice cream that cost 42p and this cornetto was not your ordinary cornetto it was some chocolate disc thing, such a bargain i nearly had another. We also nabbed a KFC which isn't good for saying we had a Burger King in the MBK the day before but i did made up for it by having the old chicken and friend rice in the evening J.Should of gone 1 further and had a diet coke aswell.
We had 4 hours to burn before our bus at 6 so i gave Dan a game of Pro Evo and I got slaughtered but later getting my own back on the pool table.I think that was the first time in 5 years i've played pro evo so that's my excuse for that one and Dan's for the pool table was that he hadn't had a few Chang's to correct his erroneous.
Our bus was due to leave at 6pm but this is Thai time and is never when you expect.I don't know the formula for Thai time but we got picked up by a walking taxi at 5:45pm and set off around 7pm.It was an overnight bus on a bog standard coach but wasn't the longest or the worst bus ride we have had to endure and actually it went fairly swiftly.Just a shame i got 1 hour of sleep.Even when we made a stop and half the people got off for there ferry i sprawled across 4 seats with the recliners right the way back which i've slept on rougher places in a room than on there but still couldn't sleep! If we had anymore long trips i'm going to invest in some sleeping pills.
6am we arrived at our first point of arrival, some place near Surat Thani where we were meant to grab a ferry over to the island of Koh Samui.2 hours later everyone was sent to get on a bus where we drove for 30-40mins (no idea when your so tired) to the ferry port where again where we waited for a further 30mins outside before boarding the ferry where again we waited yet another 30mins before leaving. It seems with these things you wait around more than you travel which is very annoying and fustrating but what can you do?There shouldn't be too many of these sort of journey's left and when you know your only a few hours from the beach it lifts your spirits a tad.
I'll leave you there as we have now left the ferry at 10am after arriving in Surat Thani 4 hours ago lol.I'm sure we could be in Kuala Lumpur in the same time but we are here, it's sunny and the beach's are looking good.I can guarantee i'll fall asleep this afternoon on the beach and will be next complaining about my sun burn.
