Well that was an interesting opening to Cambodia. Why that guy was doing that at the side of the road at 10am i will never know but maybe he waits until the buses come by for a bit of an audience. It was pretty funny anyway, but the journey continued.
After another 3 hours or so we arrived the other side of the lake where we were to catch a ferry across. In Vietnam and Thailand i always found it amazing how they fit 4 people on a motorbike.4! That's nothing in Cambodia, try 5 whilst holding a water barrel and a basket of something (probably chickens). If you have ever seen the pictures on the internet of overload's where people have overpacked vehicles with people of items and have broken or tipped over then that is exactly what it is like in Cambodia.A mini bus for 8 carrying over 20 people inside, sitting on each others laps and squashing together but not only that 2 or 3 people will be sat on the roof with a silly amount of cargo.I saw one minivan with a good 20 people inside but unlike the other one that had a motorbike strapped the boot, this had a rack full of chicken that were more packed than the people inside.I've seen a cyclo with 8 people on and lorrys packed with people like sardines...crazy.
When we were on this ferry crossing the lake there were a few beggers dressed in dirty clothes which most of them were young children baring a few with limbs missing. Many of the children were carrying naked babies that were also dirty and they would put on the saddest face ever and go 'please'. I noticed 1 lady feeling so sorry for her she gave this young girl a dollar and she just walked away with it in her hand. When leaving the ferry she was with a few of her friends smiling and laughing and when she saw the lady who gave her the dollar just smiled, blew a few kisses and was strangely happy.I've heard bad stories about some parents cutting their own kids forearms off so that they would gain more in begging but whether this is true or just a myth i don't know but i did see a few.Its sad becausethis really is a ridiculously poor country but you can't tell who is genuinely worse off than the rest or just playing the system. This was the reason i never gave anything to any of them, especially as they were often rude and just demanded money.
When we arrived in Phnom Penh we amanged to get lost again on a tuktuk and ended up getting two tuktuks to a backpackers area where we found a room for $8 a night. It was in a good location so cost more than what we could of had and we also ended up with a double.Maybe they are starting to think we are a gay couple now before we ask for a room, i have no idea but we don't care.
Today we just wondered around the area stopping at the bars obviously.60 cents for a beer...get in!We pretty much drank all day lol with the occasional walk around to look for other bars, a club or some people to chat to.We spoke to 1 american guy but after 10mins he reminded us of an annoying Steve we had previously met on our trip so we decided we wouldn't text him later that night :/ The evening we went to the 2 recommended clubs where all of a sudden the price of a beer tripled in the bar and in the club quadrupled! We weren't that bothered but there was no atmosphere or westerners in there, just a few hookers and lads looking a bit bored.About 1am we went back to the room and watch a film (Dan did, i fell asleep).
Throughout our first day we could not believe the average age of the travellers here, 50 odd. They all had these 'rent a girlfriend' as we called them and were just walking around bars, tourist areas with these young girls.1 was about 15 with a guy past 60 and kissing in the middle of the bar....nice!Whilst in that bar me and Dan were having a game of pool on 'the worst pool table in cambodia' as it was called and there were 3 girls serving behind the bar that loved me and Dan.I just nipped to the toilet and came back and Dan was chatting to them (signalling help) funnily enough when Dan replied with his age of 20 they were the same age! Fancy that?!They all got their old school nokia's out and wanted a picture of us lol.We left pretty swiftly anyway.
The 2nd day in Phnom Penh we had planned to head to the Thai Embassy to get a 60day tourist visa but after seeing Pri he had said there was a 3-4 days wait so we went and got an agency to sort it out at the cost of $17.Its obviously a back hander job but ahwell as long as we get our visa. After sorting that bad boy out we got a tuktuk to the killing fields.I didn't really know what to expect from here as i knew nothing about it at all about from alot of people died around 25 years ago.The museum was good in th sense of explaining what happened but there was a lot of brutality all around.Mass graves of headless people, kids having there heads bashed against a tree to death and just plain murdering on a huge scale. There were apparently 15,000 people killed there and 9,000 remains have been found and after being treated placed in a memorial in the centre of the killing fields.Pol Pot the leaderof the Khmer Rouge killed anyone that he thought was a threat or non believer of keeping the traditional lifestyle for Cambodians rather than the western way it was heading towards. He would also kill their familys to 'prevent revenge later in life'.
When we arrived back we stopped at the bar for some food and a drink when the funniest thing since Nati on his motorbike.Dan had burger and chips but when he went for the pepper he got the wrong side of the sprinkler and plastered his chips with pepper lol.It was black, but after doing a bit of DIY on them, scraping as much of it off as he could, he ate the lot.I think i found it funnier than him and i should of took a picturehaha.
Later than day it was very hot so we went for a snooze and to watch a film.I was proper happy that iron man was on but after 5 mins i fell asleep just like Dan.We woke up at 7 and headed to the bar again for some more 40p beers. We walked further down the riverside to find a live music bar with free pool and popped inside for a beer. The beer was $2.25 so we wasn't drinking anywhere near as fast as before but had a few games of table football (I won) and waited for the pool table.Once on, I won again....Dan has only beat me twice and that was on the 'worst table in cambodia' where i potted the black once, maybe i should start and let him win a few more before i'm travelling alone.
We got another earlier night than usual and watched a couple of films with one being Madagascar :D and when i woke up I am legend was on.We went 1 last time to the bar before catching our minibus to Siem Reap. This minibus does have air con but i've still got a right old sweaty back.It should be around 6 hour trip and we are planning on going to Angkor wat tomorrow so that when we get our passports sent to us on the 18th feb when we will hopefully have our thai visa and can get back to Bangkok.
