Well the couple of days I've had to look around Shanghai have been ok. It's a real shoppers paradise which isn't much use to me. I have done some sightseeing but with the amount of people everywhere the cues are always long and take up so much time.
I've spent hours wandering up and down nanning road also down by the river. I took the "sightseeing tunnel " across from the bund to get to pudong. The lonely planet is spot on when its says it garish and weird. Once over there I went up the Oriental Pearl Tower which is 361m high. Unfortunately the effort to get up to the top didn't match the viewing deck. Cloudy and streaky glass didn't give much of a view. In the end it was 2 hours of my life ill never get back. I did check out Ben Bolithos favourite museum under the tower. Shanghai history museum.
Another museum i went to was the shanghai museum. Lots if cool exhibits of calligraphy, ceramics, sculptures and coins. Was worth the visit.
I also did a bus tour of the city which during I found a cool market that I went back to and bought some nick nacks to bring home. Bartering has been fun. At the end of the day it's like the share market you have a few wins and a few loses you just hope that you've won more than ur lost.
Biggest win- shirt starting at 250 yuan (nz$50) bought for 150 and got 3 more shirts for the kids included.
Biggest lose- bartered down some kids pressy 3 for 50 yuan to see 2 shops down listed at 10 yuan each!
One thing I'm sure off they won't sell you something if there's not $$$$ in it for them.
Well that's my Shanghai adventure over I think. Tomorrow back to the metro to go to train station for 10am high speed train to Beijing. Hoping to break the 308km hour on xian train. Get in at 3pm and meeting someone from Young Pioneers tours to get what I need to fly out the next day to North Korea. I am really looking forward to that now.
Then after the meeting off to sink a few wines and veers with Ben. Not to many though as I'm determined to being sharp for my flight.
Well apologies for so many blogs but I do find it quiet cathartic. It's a way of pretending someone's sharing the experience. Travelling solo is ok now but earlier sheezz was hard. Thanks for all the txts and comments. Also man it's great to be able to FaceTime and viber the family. Modern technology aye!
