Today, the children started back at school. Well, most of them. There were 4 children who stayed behind, 2 managed to get a day off, and 2 start school tomorrow. I guess they go to a different school... A few more children arrived early this morning, and some arrived during the day and throughout the afternoon, so the centre is getting busier by the minute!!
For most the day, I chatted and played with the 2 girls who stayed behind (Lalita and Sarswati - not too sure on spelling there!!), and helped them with any homework. Lalita (this is the girl with one arm amputated above the elbow) is so sweet and she laughs at almost anything!! She likes putting my arm around her and hugging it with her arm and stump, whilst looking at me with for eyes and the cutest smile you will ever see. A lot of the girls here have nose piercings, and I can't decide of I'm tempted or not to get one myself. I've asked around my English friends and family - friends all say I should get one, but family and Liam say I shouldn't. I'm 49% sure I want one - not quite 50/50 yet!! Also debating a tattoo... If I find a nice one then I might get it (just a small one, easily hidden).
Again, today feels like just going from one meal to the next!! I'm going to get a hugeeeee rice belly!! (A beer belly but full of rice instead ha!!) but at least it's all healthy food!! (Apart from the yummy chocopies and Parle-G biscuits I have sneakily in my room...).
At about 3ish, I was called to the office... A long time since I've been called to the office or somewhere similar!! Shanti and Lacchi (the main people in the centre) got me to fill out a form with my details and what subject I can teach (I had to question this, as I don't know anything well enough to teach!! And the the kids are all at different levels, some higher than me it seems!!). Lacchi told me the price of stay had gone up from 500rps to 750rps which was a bit strange... But I don't mind, as over the full 4 weeks I'm here, I'm only paying 21,000rps which is £126ish. That's for food, bed, wifi etc. not bad!! So I didn't mention anything. Lacchi then asked me to do some corrections on a 5 page document he'd prepared, talking about the "disability awareness campaign" that he's trying to set up. He told me there's a few more documents that he'd like me to correct, in the next week or so. I also suggested that instead of teaching the kids, I could do some painting of the walls, as most are chipped and have pencil marks on them. He seemed to like the idea, but then mentioned something about painting the fence (which is new by the way...) so I got a bit confused.
After super, there was a powercut!! First one so far!! But they have solar lights and a generator so it's all fine. I went upstairs to the volunteers bit, and me and Brian (the other volunteer) had a long talk (he mostly talked) about the centre. He mentioned that there's been a few wierd situations, where donated food, like fruit or fizzy drinks as a treat, has gone missing and noones seen it. Also, that some equipment and toys that Brian and others have bought especially for the kids has been locked away into a cupboard where the kids can't get to it. Or an instance where the food store has been opened by a volunteer and found with piles of rotting food. Or that some donated money has been disappearing... All very strange, along with the accommodation rates going up. Brian told me a lot of these stories, and he's going to mention it all to Michael, one of the chairs of NCT, based in Bristol, who support DNC and raised money for this new building. He's the sister of Fran who I arranged this whole trip through. Michael's coming 31st October so I'll be able to ask him any questions I can't ask others, or that the Nepalis don't understand.
There's no water which is very annoying as I stink and need a shower, even if it's a cold one!! And we're still in a powercut, so there's no wifi to upload this so read it whenever I guess!! Off to bed for me (and yes it's only half 8...)
