Jason, Martin (& Co) Across the USA!
Start the day at the Smithsonian Castle and set off on a walking tour of the city (in mega humidity and increasing temperatures!). First stop is the Air & Space Museum. Catch the 3D Imax movie about the moon before we grab a spot of lunch at a McDonalds in the museum that provides the definiton of fast food. The process involves you and three members of staff and somehow the food is waiting for you before you even finish paying.
Next up we wander up The Mall to the Capitol Building, we're too late to get the full guided tour tickets but we do manage to get a look inside the House of Representitives. Stick around for a while and sit behind a tour party to enjoy the commentary before heading out and across the road to the Supreme Court. On the way back down The Mall we stop off by the fountains in the sculpture garden to cool off for a few minutes. We take in the Museum of American History and see the flag that inspired the 'Star Spangled Banner' and some muppets - of the furry, not presidential variety. Finish off the afternoon tour with a wander past the Washington Monument and head back to the hotel.
In the evening we head out to the DuPont Circle to find an internet cafe and some fabulous Mexican food. Again we're supplied with free nachos but decline to finish the first bowl this time. We take the long route back past the OEOB and White House. We get savaged by midgies at the reflecting pool and amble up the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Deciding to take an even longer route we head out past tens of sprinklers that seem to be over-watering the local grass and concrete and on past the FDR memorial en route to the Jefferson Memorial. Even as it approached midnight the Lincoln Memorial seemed relatively busy compared to the solitary guard keeping Jefferson company. Feeling we've walked far enough we make a mad dash through some more sprinklers, Jason's umbrella held high and find a taxi to take us back to the wrong hotel... Not a big deal, we get to see the Pentagon on the way to complete the tour and end up not too far from where we intended to be.
