Jason, Martin (& Co) Across the USA!
An early start as we head off for the Grand Canyon. Rain had threatened but as we get closer the weather is clear. We oull into the first viewpoint and the view simply (cliche alert...) takes your breath away. It really is hard to comprehend how vast and deep the canyon is! You can look down thousands of feet and see another smaller canyon that's still huge, down in the bottom of the main canyon! We head into Grand Canyon Village and follow a couple of the edge trails - cliffs to one side and a sheer drop to the other! We got back in the car and started to drive along the rim road, through the forests that line the road you catch glimpses of the canyon. We stop for one last look before the road turns away from the canyon edge.
On the route back we stop off at some Pueblo ruins in the desert. Its so silent out there it's really eerie! There's no wind or animal noise, just the odd gecko scuttling about. Stop for steak in Flagstaff and debate whether or not to purchase a cardboard cut out of Stewie from Family Guy for the back seat. Deciding against it we push on over the New Mexico border into Gallup to find a place to stop for the night on Route 66. End up in a discussion with a Texan and the Japanese hotel owners over the merits of various countries. In the end it would seem the general view was that the UK was more liberal, apart from being allowed to carry a gun in the states. We disagreed, but the Texan, actually carrying a gun at the time was given the benefit of the doubt!
