Wednesday 8th September
We woke at a relatively late 7;30 after a much better night sleep. It had rained during the night and that seemed to keep the animals away, or hide their sound. We washed and got ready for the long and bumpy trip back to Nairobi. Whilst brushing our teeth we were met by a small snake, our first of the trip, around one and a half feet in length it had a tiny circumference and was a deep green with small lighter dots. I didn't have my camera so couldn't take a picture or find out what it was. After another nice breakfast we packed the last of our things and boarded our van for the last time.
The journey back was long, bumpy and tiring but after around six hours on the road we made it back to Nairobi. After a quick debrief with spurwing at there HQ we tool some pictures with Rob, Francis and our van then headed back to the Kenya Comfort for our last night in Kenya. We were both looking forward to all the creature comforts that we had been missing, a nice warm bed and shower without the fear of spiders and insects. As we said our farewells we exchanged contacts with Rob and Francis. We had gotten to know them well, they were both good guys, had looked after us well and shown us some incredible things.
Our room was even nicer than before, it was much bigger and had a huge shower and bed, it all felt five star. After a much needed shower and fresh clothes we headed down to reception to enquire about the Carnivore Restaurant. Nirpal had recommended it to us, famed for serving all you can eat game meat, I was excited to say the least. We hired a taxi from the hotel who agreed to take us there, wait and bring us back for 2000 shillings, around 20 quid, not too bad considering it's the capital and an expensive city. We passed the security gates, they are everywhere in Nairobi, and drove up to the restaurant. Well, the place was so nice that it wouldn't of looked out of place in London. It was nice to sit down in a restaurant, the first thing ordered was a cocktail, both were fantastic followed swiftly by a beer, which again tasted so good being the first since England.
The restaurant was decked out in proper Kenyan garb with an outside jungle themed eating area complete with stream and mahogany models of all the animals. We were seated inside on a balcony part overlooking the main eating area near the fantastic round circular barbecue. Here all the cooking took place with each different types of meat skewered with a Masai sword and placed over the hot coals. When I say this barbecue was big, I mean it was colossal, with at least ten carvers working round it. Basically it was an all you can eat three course meal. Soup to start, which we both enjoyed, followed by the main course. TJ had vegetarian and let's face it it wasn't why we were there but they had a huge selection which eased her pain somewhat. For my main I was give a plate and each carver would walk around the restaurant with his sword offering meat to everyone that had there 'white flag' raised, once you couldn't eat anymore you lowered the flag. The meat started to come straight away... pork ribs, chicken wings, sausages, steak but I wasn't getting that much knowing the good stuff was to come. Indeed it did, I ate Ostrich meat balls and steak (my favourite), Crocodile, Buffalo heart (which was horrid), camel steak andI was offered Ox balls but turned it down, I just couldn't bring myself to eat somethings testicles! Luckly for TJ Zebra and Giraffe was not on the menu as she wasn't happy about me eating them. We had a nice pudding and I washed it all down with a sophisticated (or so I think) glass of port.
I have to say the food was fantastic and every bit lived up to Nirp's recommendation, if anyone finds themselves in Nairobi go, 50 quid for a three course meal with drinks at that quality was a steal. We left the restaurant, after some pictures, with full bellies and big smiles. It was nice to be back to civilisation and with the comfortable bed to come, a good way to see off Kenya and our first of eleven countries!
