My Australia Fun
I haven't updated for a while, mainly due to a lack of doing anything particularly noteworthy. However, that's all about to change! Today is my last day in Darwin. More on my future plans later.... I've just worked out that when I leave tomorrow, I will have been Darwin for one day short of 2 months. Which is far too long, really, but I've got mixed feelings about leaving now. One the one hand, I'm aware that spending 2 months in a smallish town without doing work is a bit excessive given all that I've still got to see, but on the other hand I've met some really nice people and had a great time. However, my money situation dictates that I have to do some work at some point, and I'd rather go somewhere else and do it!
Haven't really done much in the last few weeks. A group of us did hire a car and headed to Litchfield National Park (where I'd been before on a tour), which was really good. I love it there - the waterfalls are fantastic and the views are amazing. There's a few photos in the album. Apart from that, I've been spending my days lazing happily in the sun or watching the World Cup, although my interest wasn't as great when England went out. It seemed like everyone in Darwin was angry that night - being out on the street wasn't a safe place to be! Wasn't helped by a load of Portuguese fans beeping their horns in their cars and shouting abuse. Damn Portuguese fans, always stirring up trouble!
I've been trying to think of how many dollar meals I've had in Darwin and I think it's 53, which I think is ridiculous, but also something that I'm quite proud of. John is in the 40's, but will soon overtake me - not happy. Those meals are a backpacker's dream. 6 of us went out for our traditional Sunday lunch today (a different pub each week), and seeing as it was my last day, I was presented with a 'birthday cake' with a small plastic clown in it, so I said I'd get photographed in front of as many landmarks as I can with the clown - look out for him.
After staying up to watch the World Cup final tonight, tomorrow I shall be going on a 3 day tour to Alice Springs, which should be very nice. After spending a couple of days in Alice, I'm then going to Uluru for a few days. After that, I'm doing yet another tour, this time to Cairns, which will take a few days again. It's as cheap to do the tours as it is to fly, so I thought I might as well take my time with the tours. Naturally, my finances have taken a bit of a battering, hence the need to find a job pretty soon after I arrive in Cairns. I'm looking forward to doing a bit of work, though - it'll be nice to bring some money in and add a bit of purpose to my adventures! The only thing I'm not looking forward to is the weather in Alice - I've just got an e-mail off my friend who went a few days ago, and it's literally freezing. She's wearing a fleece and jeans all the time and is still really cold. It'll be a bit of a shock after 30 degree days for 2 solid months!
I'll leave it there; next update should be in a couple of weeks, hopefully with plenty of photos and stories!
