My Australia Fun
Good morning everyone - time for an update. I'm still in Darwin, although hopefully not for much longer. Anyway... at the end of the last update, I'd just come back from Kakadu. After spending another couple of nights at the hostel, I realised that I was bored there and decided to move to another one right in the middle of everything. After spending about 20 minutes there, I managed to meet two girls from Belfast (it's a small world), so I went out with them and about 12 of their friends for a couple of nights. After a day at the new hostel, I'd probably spoken to twice as many people as I had done in a week and a half at the other hostel. Moral: choose your hostels carefully! After the Irish went, I met John, Katie and Kathryn (see photos). Tara remained from the Irish group and Ciaran is her new man-friend. They're both Irish, funnily enough. I now have no doubt that I'll be speaking Irish when I get home. I've basically spent the last few weeks hanging out with all of them at the hostel, doing very little and quite enjoying it! There's not a great deal to do in Darwin apart from enjoy the sunshine, drink smoothies (the smoothie place is 30 seconds away from the hostel, and I'm now addicted) or go to the supermarket (about 5 metres away). Having said that, I did manage to go to the museum the other week, and I've been round a couple of the wharves. Last night we made a trip to the night market, which was pretty cool, and during the day we visited the Greek festival, which was probably the highlight of Darwin's social calendar. Now that the world cup has started, it gives all of us a chance to take advantage of Darwin's status as a premier drinking venue. We've been to the opening games since it started, but due to extreme drunkenness/extreme tiredness, I've never made it to the second game... However, I may try and watch all three tonight, seeing as Australia are playing. That'll mean going to bed at 6am, but I feel that it's got to be done at some point! Most of the recent photos are from Saturday - one guy recognised my CUFC shirt and we had a bit of a chat. I'm sure you'll be pleased to hear that, Craig! Few photos from the quiz night at the Vic as well. Not your traditional quiz, really. There's a few questions, but one of the rounds involves putting on bras, knickers etc. and getting yourself into compromising positions... In an impressive performance, we came 2nd and got a massive bar tab. They actively encourage dancing on the tables there - madness!
Plan now is to get out of Darwin in the next week or so. Me, Katie and John are going to go to Cairns and hopefully get some kind of fruit picking job in Queensland. They need the money, and I want to start chipping away at the 3 months of rural work I need to (possibly) extend my visa! Off to the botanic gardens in a bit, that should be nice. Weather is consistently lovely. At this rate, I might not see any more rain for the rest of the year! Bye for now...
