The rest of the week was just as relaxing with days by the pool, nights either in Hoi An or downtown Da Nang. This was a regular pattern during our stay at the Vinpearl resort which, as mentioned before, is way up there in quality.
We trecked off one particular night.....following one of the usual 5 o'clock clubs, in a fleet of taxis to Hoi An. The idea being a mooch, a couple of beers and dinner for all. Whilst wondering around, Joanne and Dave checked out the local artwork. Geoff spotted a barber's and I saw a watch I was after. Jo and Dave didnt bother with the paintings for the moment. Geoff......the cheeky git, managed to negotiate a hair cut for us both, so when in Vietnam, or something like that. Anyway, she began to shave Geoff's then she made a start on mine. We did try to talk Dave into taking part but he made a swift exit. With both of us looking like Joan and Andrea's very own BUDDHA'S, Geoff paid the girl the equivalent of £4 for both. There are some pictures of the visit to the barbers on Facebook, hopefully there will be some growth by the time we get back
We found the restaurant, Dave spotted it on Trip Advisor, called Street. This was a Vietnamese style type of menu, beef, fish ect. To be honest, i can't remember what I had or anyone else had for that matter. I don't recall anyone complaining. The bill came and was so cheap, this worked out to be a staggering £16 per couple........bonkers!!!
Food done we headed off towards the river, which is very picturesque with lanterns lighing up the river bank, and in some areas of the river they could be seen floating off in the distance.
Some headed back to the hotel whilst Brian, Kann, Dave, Joanne, Andrea and yours truly sat in the bar just taking it all in. I noticed a large black shadow out of the corner of my eye passing along the ground quickly. Lo
oking at Dave, he cracked on that he also saw it..it was a Rat and it was massive. We tried not to alert the others as it made a second pass for all to see this time. This gave us the excuse to head back
Another lazy day around the pool and back to Hoi An for our last night. This time heading for the Green Mango, this was our last meal all together as the next day Brian and Kann head to Hanoi. The evening was just the usual fun and jovality before we headed back to the hotel where Da Nangs answer to the Gypsy Kings (who sang Alice) were doing their thing. This time was even better than the first as this time in their set was Hotel California, Wonderful World
and another great classic, Speedy Gonzales. This was entertainment at its sheer brilliance and had us all in stitches to the point where Joanne was in tears with laughter. Time to retire back to the room as packing was in order ready to move on to HCMC.
At the airport we said our goodbyes to Brian and Kann as they disappeared through the gate. We had an hour or so before we were back in the air to HCMC. I have since learnt that last year there had been 940 road related deaths in the city we are about to return to......wonderful!!
Back at Hotel Nikko, checked in, bags dumped and out within 20 minutes to another typical local restaurant on the street corner of our hotel, next to 'the roundabout' which was a sight to behold.....Facebookers have vouched for that. The menu was typical with a twist, with such things as Frog, Fake dog and wait for it, Womb of something....WTF??
We ordered our dishes, the Heineken kept flowing in sweltering heat. The bill was obtained and again was ridiculously cheap at 1.8million dong, about £54 for eight meals with 26 Heineken and some soft drinks also included....this is one cheap country, more so if you are prepared to experiment. The chaps Geoff, Dave, Ian and myself stayed on for a couple more drinks watching the world going by (there was so much going on), whilst the girls headed back to the hotel for cakes.
With us safely back at the hotel, another quick change and off to the Bitexco Tower for a final time in this busy metropolis.
This really is an amazing place - next stop, Abu Dhabi for a couple of days
