Day 57 - Sydney/Bali
We awake nice and early and I head to the post office while Si finishes packing to send home the clothes we wont be needing for the next part of the trip. As with any other post office the queue is massive as its just opened and I have to wait in line with a huge box of jumpers etc. We've opted to send our stuff via sea mail and i'm shocked when the lady that served me said it could take up to 3 months for it to arrive ... so we might beat it home!
After the post office and the last of the packing we check out and head to Gloria Jeans around the corner for some breakfast and to make use of their free wifi again. Several blog updates later its time for us to make our way to the airport for our 6 hour flight to Bali.
We jump in a taxi just outside Central Station and are soon arriving at the airport. Check-in wasn't open when we arrived and when checking the details on the itinery Si had saved on his phone we began to get a little worried as the flight number on the itinery was completely different to the one on the board at the airport and there were no other flights to Bali.
Check-in finally opens and we make our way to the counter feeling very nervous and Si is already planning what he is going to shout at the guy we booked it with if we cant get on the flight!
We get to the check-in desk and all seems fine until the woman stops typing and turns to her colleague asking them for advice .. we paniced but it was ok in the end think the woman was new and just needed to know how to do something so we left the desk smiling with boarding cards for the flight :)
Before the flight we had about 2 hours to kill so we did a last spot of souvenier shopping and Si got himself a 'stubby holder' (for those of you that dont know what it is its a holder that you put cold beers in when you're drinking them to help keep the beer cold and your hand dry and normal temperature) and then found that we had no other option in this part of the airport than a McDonalds for our dinner/tea.
The plane was quite big and we had nobody sitting in front of us so Si had enough room for those lanky legs of his and we were soon in the air and on our way to Bali. Officially the end of our time in Australia which we've both really enjoyed but are looking forward to spending some time in a warmer climate and on a nice beach!
The flight was just over 6 hours and it took us about 5 to even leave Australia, we still cant get over how big it is! Anyway we arrive in Bali at around 10pm local time and you can feel the heat as soon as you step off of the plane. Denpasar is quite a small airport and when you get to the bag carousel people have already taken your bags off and want to carry them for you for a tip etc.
We get out of the airport and to get a taxi to our hotel we have to buy a pre-paid ticket at the taxi office who then give you and the driver a ticket to prove that it has been paid for as the taxi driver has to show this on the way out of the airport to show that he has picked up the fare from the office. A dodgy looking guy did come up to us when we were in the queue saying 'he'd take us where we needed to go' but having read about this stuff before arriving we politely declinded his offer.
Whilst in the taxi on the way to the hotel there are loads of locals riding around on scooters there were just so many accidents waiting to happen I definately wouldn't hire a car or anything when I was here its every man for himself on these roads! We arrive at the hotel and the room is quite small but it has a bed, toilet, shower and is very clean so we couldnt ask for anything more! The hotel we're staying at is in Legian which is inbetween Kuta and Seminyak.
After our long day of travelling we throw our bags down in the room and hit the hay ready for our first full day in Bali tomorrow :D
