Day 6: So today we get our Stockholm cards, which will allow us to finally use transportation within the city as well as getting into museums and a bunch of other attractions. But its only for three days beginning today, so Jeff has already planned out the next couple of days so we kind of have to work around his schedule. But itll be fun to explore and see other parts of Stockholm.
Today we toured the City Hall of Stockholm. After class, we had about 3 hours to our selves, which me and my group use to plan our project since we have a project due this upcoming Monday. So after a short lecture, we buckled down for about an hour and planned how we would evaluate transportation in Stockholm, using bus, subway and bike, and how effective they are. We planned to evaluate these transit systems later tonight since our stockholm card would allow us to explore these systems for free.
We ate lunch, and a couple of us went walking around the city before our City Hall tour at 15:00. Me and Diana were talking about buying a couple of shirts since we brought little and didnt want to keep on handwashing since Stockholm doesnt really have laundrymats (and if they did it would be super expensice), so we hit up the mall. I went to H&M since there was one on every block in the city and bought a couple of shirts for the trip. We then made our way to the tour. But before we made it to the tour, we had to get some ice cream because its a tradition to eat ice cream at least once a day in Stockholm.
The tour of City Hall was beautiful. We were able to see the inside of the building - and was able to walk up stairs to the tower to get a great view of Stockholm. The tour was very short, but it was beautiful to see the architecture and the art in the building. Walking up the stairs was a pain. It was a workout. It started off with wide set of staircase to become narrow where we had to line up in single file line to climb up. But the view was worth it. It was spectacular to see the city from that high. After the tour, my group and I decided to do our "read the city" project so we could just get it over with, and have all afternoon Friday to use our stockholm cards to explore something else.
So off we went. Our destination was a cemetery where we heard was beautiful beyond words, so we set our location. From the hostel to the cemetery, how well was transportaion in the city. Me and my roommate Rasam as well as Noar (he wasnt in our group, but he just wanted to bike there) biked to the cemetery and took us about 40 minutes. Brittany and Diana took the bus, which took the longest they said, and Chima took the subway, which was a direct shot to the cemetery.
The bike ride wasnt that bad. There was some hills involved, which was a struggle, but biking on the street, near cars was exhilirating, and it made me equal to them. Stockholm's bike paths are very distinct then that of the United States, and theres many signs of bike paths. It was very clear. There was definitely more bike infrastructure than that of the US since alot of people bike everyday to commute to where they need to go. Biking was great since it provided the scenery that you cant get from cars or train, and it was a leasure form of transportation, which I loved, since I could go on my own pace. It was amazing to bike in a different city.
Once we got there, we waited for everyone else. (Suprisingly we were the first ones). Chima ended up getting lost in the train station, and took the wrong line, but it was all good. At least we didnt lose him lol. But once we all got there, it was beautiful. It was so many trees and miles and miles of green grass. It was very peaceful, and biking through the cemetery you were able to see alot.
After spending a few minutes, we had to return since I rented city bikes and there was a time limit of 3 hours. So me, Noar, and Rasam returned back to the hostel about 35 minutes later. Once we got back I changed, and group wanted to go to the Photography museum. I was beat, tired from biking. But I wanted to pack so much in so I could have time on Friday to explore more. So Rasam and I decided to go with that group after changing and getting some food.
That night, we went to the photograph museum, which showed many different art and photographs and videos. They had many interesting photographs, but one that stuck out particularly was the nurse. This artist captured different scenes from different areas from 1980s to 2013 and included a nurse in every one of them. It was pretty creepy, but really interesting. The video was also interseting, but because I was short on time I decided not to stay long to watch. I ended up viewing more photographs of landscapes in different parts of the world, which were beautiful to see.
After the museum, my tiredness was already kicking in, so I was happy I was in bed soon after our museum run. Today was definitely fun, and Im glad I packed in as much as I could. We leave Stockholm Monday morning, so I wanted to take advantage of the time I had here.
Until tomorrow.
