Day 8: I can't believe it's already been a week since I've been in Europe. It's going by so quickly. Ahh. I should continue to enjoy every single day that I'm here. Yes.
So today sounds exciting: biking in Karlstad and touring one of the co-op housing projects as well as the city. Today was our first day using the Eurail pass. It was interesting. It was hectic to activate our passes since we had ordered them online. It was hectic to find our reserved cart and reserved seatings since they weren't consecutive numbers and were more scattered. And it was hectic trying to fill out our pass since the Eurail pass you need to fill it out manually, with your itinerary and information as well. The morning was hectic trying to make coffee, fill out our passes, get everything ready, and be out the door by 7:30am. But in the end, we all managed - and ended up having a great day in Karlstad.
We left Slussen station and headed to Tcentral, where we hopped on the train to Karlstad. It was a nice train ride, not to long, and I got some work done. My group and I worked on our project and I did some research for my paper. Once we got to Karlstad 2 hours later, our professors friend lead us on a tour of Karlstad. We headed to the main square to get our bikes. It was a wonderful experience biking through the city and country side (I made sure I got a red bike haha). Surprisingly, all 31 of us stuck together, and rode along the river in Karlstad.
We finally headed to our destination, which was a co-op housing 45 minutes away from the city's main square. We were able to tour the co-op housing, made of 16 homes with outdoor parks, community garden and sustainable community living. It was amazing. One thing I found interesting was their heating system - comprised of a pipe vertically dug 80 kilometers down in the soil that boils and heats when moving through the pipe, creating energy and heat for these homes. It was beautiful to see how people live in this community and focus on sharing and living a sustainable life. All homes had decent size rooms, green house and patio. It was beautiful.
Afterwards, we biked to a place off the river, where we all enjoyed the sun and took a swim in the water. After our mini break, we headed to dinner at a restaurant in one of Karlstad's parks. The food was delicious (they made sandwiches, which were bomb). It was absolutely tasty. We then snooped around onto a bridge that led to a field of wheat grass within the park. After dinner, we then toured some parts of the city, including some housing projects and recycling facilities. At around 615pm, we headed out, and it was time to leave Karlstad and head back to good ole Stockholm.
