Hi,
Now I'm back again at the school after our 2 week adventure trip to Mainland Tanzania. It was an amazing trip!!!! Our program was packed with new adventures every day, so we have experienced sooo much.
During our trip we didn't know what was going to happen the next day, which was really cool, so you really enjoyed every day to the fullest. It is something the teachers have decided.
We were told that we were leaving saturday at ten o'clock, but nothing else. Two Dala dala's (local bus) came and picked us up. We drowe to Stone Town where we took a fairy to Dar es Salam. Here we stayed for one night and then we continued in a new bus. Because you didn't know for how long you were going to be in the bus, it didn't seem to take that long, eventhough we spendt about nine hours in it. We arrived in Lushoto in the Usambara Mountains. I should mention that it was an amazing bus drive up in the mountains. Here we where devided into two groups: the antilops and the baboons. I was in the baboon group :) The other group left and we headed over to two open landrovers. We were told that we should be 13 in each car with our backpacks, so there wasn't much room. We stod in the middle and sat on the side bars of the car. It was a very bumpy ride up further into the mountains. It took about two hours, so your but was really sore hehe! It was really fun also. We arrived at a convent in a small town called Imao. Here we stayed for two nights, because we had arrived so late the first day. We went on a hike and was shown around the convent by some nonnes. It was quite cold here, so we were all freezing, because we are use to the heat from Zanzibar. It was fun talking to the nonnes and they sang some songs for us, and then we sang some danish and norwegian songs for them. It was nice and relaxing! Incredebly quiet! Then we drove back in the some cars to Lushoto. Here we went on an all day hike in the mountains. It was pretty hard, but an awesome trip. We walked for 9 hours and walked 24km.We went up small dirt paths and had to climb over tree trunks. We also had to be careful because it rained quite much, so it was really slippery. There were some amazing views! On the way down we went into a small cave unknowing what was in it. Suddenly bats were flying all over the place...a bit spooky when the only light you had was your flashlight. We had the most delisious lunch at a Farm on the way back. It was owned by a german or deutch man, so they made their own sort of rugbrod and had cheese as well, something we haven't had since we left Denmark, so it was a real treat. We all ate far to much :) We stayed in Lushoto for one night and then we continued in a new bus. We arrived in Moshi, where we spent the day walking around in small groups and looking at the town. It is here many backpackers stay when they want to climb Kilimanjaro, because it is not far away. We didn't go there though, but we went on another hike. Then we continued in bus to Arusha. From here we where divided into 8 small goups of 7-8 people. I was in an all girls group. We got our own car and driver, and now the safari part of our trip was going to start. We had the best driver ever! He was called Papa Africa and the nicest man. Our driver had recieved 4 letters from the teachers and every new day we would recieve a new letter telling us what was going to happen that day. We started in Ngorongoro Crater, which was amazing. We saw many zebras, buffalos, wilder beest, elephants, flamingos, also lions, heyenas and many more animals. The second day we went to a masai villiage, where we spent the afternoon walking around and seeing the village, and then we went on a walking safari with one of the masias. Unfortunately it was raining very heavely this day, so we all got soaked and really muddy. It was a good trip though. After we had walked for some time they wanted to come pick us up in the cars, but on the way they got stuck. For about two hours we tried to push the car clear of the mud, but nothing helped. At last we had to leave the one car and all drive back in another car. We were pretty tired after this. When we got back to the village two of the masai men showed us how to slaughter a goat. They also drank the blood and ate the kidneys raw Yummiii! I only tired a little bit of blood and some of the liver and intestine, which they prepared on the bondfire. It was okay. Later we had the meat for dinner together with some pasta. The third day we went to Great Rift Valley where we together with a masai made a walking safari. Here we saw three giraffs up close. We were looking at them and they were also looking at us, so we followed them for qiute a bit. Again there were plenty of zebras and antilops and also baboons and giraf gazelle. It was a very nice trip and the masai was very good at telling us about the animals. The next morning we got up really early so we could see the sunrise, where you could see Kilimanjaro in the back ground. It was spectacular! The fourth day we went to Lake Manyara where we saw many more animals among these we saw lions in trees. It is the only place where you can see this, so that was awesome. Later we drowe back to a campsite just outside Arusha where all the groups met up with eachother. Here we stayed for two nights, before our trip went back to Dar es Salam by bus and then back to Zanzibar.
It has been an amazing trip!!! I can't even describe how awesome it has been:)
Take care. Love Majken
