We woke up early and caught the sun coming up ovet the tops of the buildings on the pier and set about planning our day ahead. We decided to head check out Venice beach for the afternoon before heading up the coast to San Simeon. We broke our fast (sorry, been reading too much Game of Thrones), surrounded by surfboards and what looked like some half-way-house tennants and were given the sound advice by one to 'stay hydrated', before hitting the road.
Venice beach wasn't quite what we were expecting, but that may be due to the time of year. Instead of seagulls they seemed to have a flock of homeless men and women guarding their shopping trolleys of belongings. We took a walk up the boardwalk, which again I can imagine inthe height of summer is a hub of activity and street performers. We were offered a rather aggressive tribal drum group who insisted you needed to be 'full of love and happiness' to dance to their drums, but went about ensuring this in a rather militant way! The other stalls of art and tat being sold, we came to the conclusion, was the product of the American dream gone too far. Sometimes, no matter how much you believe in yourself, what you are producing is just s***e.
My interest in Venice beach was perked up at the sight of Muscle Beach and the Basketball courts. Enough said there.
We headed to the beach and inbetween sunbathing caught sight of some dolphins splashing in and out the surf between the surfers and swimmers. At about 3pm it started to get a bit chilly for our liking (23degrees - it is November after all!) so we started our four hour drive up the coastal road route 101 to San Simeon. AMAZING. Mountains on one side of us and the Ocean on the other. This was made all the more beautiful by the sunset as we reached what looked like proper frontier land - our eyes were peeled for any Injins. Donna noted how many McDonalds there are, I explained that this is because it is their national dish to which Donna was most surprised (!!!). At the motel we planned and booked for tomorrow night in San Franscico.
