We packed up our stuff and said Sayounara to our new Japanese friends (Donna is friends with them on facebook so they are REAL friends now) and we set off towards Hermosa Beach. There we dumped our stuff in the hostel and headed out to the beach, passing on the way the french lady hostel owner who cried out a cheeky 'ooh la la' at the weirdness of one of the guests (much to Donna's delight as she had never heard a french person actually say the phrase before!). We chilled on the beach for a few hours, may have fallen asleep for some of those! After, we attempted a dip in the water (it was freezing - weird that, being November and all!), we got back in Sally and hit the road to catch the sunset over LA from Griffith park. This proved to be a race against the sun thanks to the LA rush hour traffic, but we caught it just in time and were rewarded with some fantastic views. It blew our minds a bit when we could look left and it was night time and when we turned around it was still daylight! Physics hey?! Talking of which - we then headed into the observatory to have a mooch about and we ended up listening to a guide talking us through the science behind a giant Foucault's Pendulum they have in the entrance. Again, minds were blown! It appears that the pendulum moves bit by bit, knocking over these little metal pegs. HOWEVER - the law of motion tells us that the pendulum will always swing in the same direction - it is us the earth which is moving bit by bit, the pendulum doesn't actually change direction at all. See learning and travelling!
In awe at the world of science we headed out to admire another triumph of physics - Donna's parallel parking. We drove back to the hostel via paramount studios to check out the famous water tower and get a snap - it was disappointingly well back into the studio - and I'd already been disappointed by the lack of lit-up-ness of the Hollywood sign! Back in Hermosa we had dinner and headed up to bed. The hostel was right on the entrance to the pier above bars, nothing that some earplugs couldn't block out. Yes ,that is the difference between doing your gap year at 28 and not 18!!
