I have many fond memories of growing up, but my favorite always seem to revolve around traditions and special activities we did year after year. Some of those include trekking through the "woods" to find the perfect Christmas tree, decorating it with music playing while having punch and cookies, Memorial day picnics, and hunting Easter eggs in the house or the back yard when it was warm enough. It's been hard to recreate those traditions with my boys due to several factors: we don't have any family around, friends come and go, we are constantly moving so getting involved with community events takes some research. Last Easter Ben was away at school, so the boys and I got dressed up and joined a friend at a post-wide Easter Egg Hunt in Heidelberg. I was really disappointed in this event. There were hundreds of people there, not enough eggs, and my children got trampled when they tried to pick up eggs (by parents, not kids). To top it off, they didn't even get a picture with the Easter Bunny. After waiting in line for a long time, we finally get to the front and bunny took a break and didn't come back. This year I vowed to give them a better experience, so I convinced our FRG to throw a company Easter egg hunt. We found a bunny suit to rent, set up decorations, and even got a bouncy house. There may have been a few glitches, like my two year old having a break down because he wanted to get eggs with this brother instead of waiting his turn, we didn't have enough chairs for people to sit in, and there were snowflakes. But all in all, it was much more enjoyable than last year.
We also went to an Easter Market in Hessenpark last weekend. We were freezing cold, but I had to see these famously decorated eggs I had heard so much about. I was looking for a glass one that I could add to my ornament collection, but didn't find one. The eggs seemed so fragile that I didn't think it would make it home in one piece, so instead of buying an egg we got some brawts, bought a bottle of Appfelwein, and called it a day.
