For today's trip we are driving down the Rhein River (castle road) to show my parents all the beautiful castles along this scenic route. We started by driving to Diez to see the family castle. After a quick walk around the town we drove to Koblenz to have lunch at the Ehrensbreistein Fortress.
The fortress we visited was built in the early 1800's, but there is evidence of fortifications on the spot that date back to 1,000 B.C. It was used as a military headquarters during World War I. An American general saved it from being destroyed by convincing others of it's historical significance. The French army occupied it until after World War II, when it was handed over the the state.
We walked around a little, but the snow was coming down quickly and we were freezing, so we found the restaurant, ate, and left.
We drove down the Rhine river, however, the day was so overcast that the views were not very good. We were able to see some castles, but it was not nearly as impressive as it would have been on a clear day. I guess Mom and Dad will just have to come back in warmer weather.
