Good morning, happy Saturday!
It's 8am and boarding the RM for day 2 up to Jasper. I'm wearing my RM 2011 pin badge today, now I have joined the elite club of gold leaf travellers!
We are adding a further 274 miles today, from leaving Kamloops. Jasper stands 4000ft above Vancouver and is apparently surrounded by mountains on all sides...
Will be looking out today for a Sasquatch (Footeus biggus), so many lines I could say on that one...
Again I can't say how lovely the views have been on the way. I think the two biggest highlights of the day though would have to be pyramid falls and Mount Robson, which truly is something to behold. It's the highest peak in the Rockies, 3,954m/12,972ft high. It is so tall it creates it's own weather! Totally stunning.
As we were tootling along this morning a freight train came by with 175 carriages attached! There was an engine in the middle for the sheer size to keep it moving. It took minutes to pass us by, we tried to work out the length, but failed miserably!
The food again was fantastic, I think I must have eaten my body weight over the last two days on the train, but it was too good to miss! We have met some great people over the last two days from all around the world, had a great laugh, found out lots about where they live, what they do and shared plenty of stories! The attendants were all friendly and couldn't do enough for you.
We arrived in Jasper at 6pm Pacific time, but lost an hour to Mountain time so after saying our goodbyes to our fellow travellers we set about instantly checking out downtown Jasper.... Well, 5 minutes later, it was done! There is one street and the highway out. It was very true though about the 360degree mountains, it feels like you can touch them. The sun was setting behind a range and the snow on the peaks looked unreal.
We found a tiny coffee shop to get a takeout and mooched back to our hotel. The only downside of this holiday is living out of a case every day but can't be helped if you want to see these things in life!
Back in the hotel now, it's 22.27 and flashing on the clock and blogging for the day, night everyone x
Ps: did I tell you we saw a black bear and a Sasquatch today, photos to prove it...
