Sunday morning here in Jasper. We have awoken this morning, drawn back the curtains to the sun streaming over various mountain ranges. The weather is cooler, the mountain air fresh but it's beautiful.
Breakfast at Lou Lou's, now heading on the shuttle for Whistlers Mountain, strange that we have scaled two Mountains called Whistler hundreds of miles apart!
The cable car to the mountain station takes a full 7 minutes so you know it's high! The air thins and the temperature drops at least 10 degrees. We boarded, Kate already looking very anxious and set off. The views were stunning on the way up, Jasper becoming smaller and the lakes looking more blue the higher we climbed. Once at the station, you can walk 360degree around to take in the views. I then noticed the trail to the summit, a sheer climb with sheer drops at either side. Kate decided enough and stayed at the station but off I went... The climb was tough, you lose your breath easily and have to keep stopping but that gives you more time to take in the enormity of what's around you. I said in Whistler WOW, well today I'm speechless. I got to what I thought was the summit to be greeted by a much more sheer climb. The weather turned instantly, the rain came and the clouds covered the tips. I carried on, chatting to the odd climber I saw about the whole climb. It's amazing who you meet and the experiences you share while away! A couple from Bristol kindly took a photo of me literally on top of the world. I got to the top and felt unbelievable. I sat for a while taking it all in, snapping away. The weather was poor and I started my descent, but I wanted to make an Inukshuk to leave on the mountain for me, Laura and Joe. I hope no one touches it, that would be sacrilege!!
Back on terra firma now and sitting on the terrace at the Fairmont Park Lodge, Jasper, enjoying tea and looking over Lake Beauvert and staring at Whistlers mountain. If I'm ever coming away again, I'm staying in Fairmont hotels let me tell you! They are all so luxurious..
We decided to head from the hotel to one of the trails by the lake and up to Old Fort Point. Again as we climbed up, the views of the Athabasta River and meeting of the Miette were great. Good photo shoot at the top and then the heavens opened! Back in Jasper for a coffee and dry off, good job we did the mountain this morning, everything has disappeared now! The rain looks as though it has set in for the evening, hope not, can't complain though nothing been spoiled and apparently the weather has been terrible all summer!
The rain has stopped, yes! We are trudging through the main street in Jasper, have had a lovely meal, raspberry mojitoe at Earls and made a purchase, which I can't say what yet!
Going back to our hotel now, early night, early start on the next stage of the Clampits on tour...
Night x
