Rocky Mountaineer Journey Through The Clouds - Day One
Boarded the Rocky Mountaineer train for full steam ahead through the Rockies to Kamloops, and another 285miles on our journey, which is our mid point stay over tonight. On the way up today we will see such delights as the Fraser Valley, Hells Gate Tunnel, Jackass mountain, Jaws of Death gorge, Black Canyon tunnel and Mount Savana, all from the comfort of our Gold Leaf dome carriage.
There will be so many photo shoots today, will need to be careful not to get carried away with them.
Hello again...
Mid afternoon now and I have been standing for about an hour on the outside observation deck of the train, witnessing some of the most incredible sights. Not a photo in the world could even begin to comprehend the beauty, and sheer vastness that is the phenomenon of the Rockies. The formation of rocks is beyond breathtaking, the Fraser river with it's silt and the clear blue water of the Thompson river. Where they meet is beautiful.
The train we are travelling on is luxury personified. The food and service second to none. There are 25 carriages on the train today, with 598 passengers on board. There are 6 domed carriages. That's a lot of people to cater for and they have done it brilliantly! Tomorrow the train will shorten to 9 carriages with only 2 domes as the other passengers will head off for Banff to complete their journey through the clouds experience!
I feel truly humbled to have been lucky enough to witness this. My recollections of it won't be on camera, but in my memory to keep forever.
So, onto Kamloops for an overnight stop, a 'meeting of the waters' town for the North and South Thompson rivers.
While I have been on this trip, I have taken to the Inukshuk, which derives from the likeness of a person in Inuktitut (The Inuit language) It is a representation of friendship, respect, trust and can be used to show danger to travellers or as a memorial of a beloved person. It was used as the winter Olympic logo in February 2010; you probably don't even remember it, or understand what it stands for, I certainly didn't until I got here. I will be bringing one back and if you are on my present list, you now know what you are getting! I just need to see if they have a snowglobe with one in, as you know I collect those too!
Disembarked in Kamloops and although not been rushing around today, tired out, think it's an early night, ready for day two up to Jasper.
Night everyone x
