Journey from Puerto N atalis to Torres17.02.10
Wow what a day, travelled here by ferry boat, walked to a glacier, caught an 8 man zodiac up a fast flowing river for 90 minutes, walked a little to get past a water fall, and then transfered to another zodiac to go the last 40 minutes to the National Park..oh and had lunch in a lodge that just happened to be on an island in the middle of the river! Once in the park we had a private transfer by 4x4 across unmade roads and trackswith a 2 hour guided and stops drive to the hotel which is at the lower slopes of Torres del Paine. It was all amazing, will load some photos when I get to Argentina again cos plug sockets are different here!! Geoff have taken some special pictures for you ...they are of the main ferry marina where the 2 tourist boats left from for the initial part of the journey. Saw Glacier Balmaceda, Glacier Serrano, where we caught the zodiac, then went up the River Serrano which took us from the Bernardo O´Higgins National Park to the Torres del PAine NAtional Park. Nature watch...guanacos, fox, condors.

This hotel is like an adventure hotel, you go to a presentation by the guides at 7 each evening, and then decide on the activities for the next day. We chose 2 x 3 hour walks for the first day. First was to Lake Sarmiento, then a break for lunch, then at 3pm left for a walk to some caves with paintings...saw carcasses of the guanacos that had been eaten by the pumas. Saw Condor, Falcon and fox besides the guanacos....photos show scenery...later! You would like the walking ad the scenery here Lindy and Stan, also this place we´re staying...though the restuarant is too pricey...bar food is ok though.
Enjoyed pisco sours sitting in the lounge overlooking the towers of the Torres Del Paine.

Thismorning we set off at 9.30am towads the Towers on horseback with gouchos whistling and shouting. It was a 2hour trek through rivers and along ledges until we came to a refuge....well, those of you who know my love of horses and heiht, and thin ledges can imagine the scene. At oe point my horse walked off course and under a tree branch on a ledge...the man behind me followed and his hat got stuck in the tree. My horse also stopped fora drink in the middle of a river...I had to hold my fee up spo I didn´t get them wet.
Dismounting ws somewhat difficult, my knees didn´t work any more...the goucho managed to me from the horse.
Revived by the hot chocolate at the refuse our group continued on foot to the bottom of the ´towers´where we ate our packed lunches.
Did the journey in reverse, walking and riding down what I considered to be sheer drops ....my horse knew he was coming home cos he was one step behing the goucho....with me trying to look sedate but clinging o for dear life.
Got back here about 5pm and have enjoyed 2 beers with our éxpedition friends´. Neither my legs, arms fingers or feet are working properly...but it was a really fantastic day!!!
Off to Punta Arenas tomorrow, still in Chile near the Magallan Straits where we go on another boat and see some penguins I think. Photos will follow in a day or 2.
Love to all x
