I'm currently suffering from all kinds of aching joints and bruises!! But totally worth it!!!
Found a girl from my dorm but not on the tour that wanted to give snowboarding a go too, her name was Vicky and she lives in Darwin but from a farming country town like me but only in WA!
Got up really early yesterday after waking up many times from the warmest blanket I've ever felt- it was thermal and soooooooo warm and made me far too hot!! Got the bus into whistler village and wandered around for a while then met up with Vicky and got a lift pass and fitted for our gear. Only blackcomb mountain was open but apparently conditions are great for this time of year! On our way up the gondola we chatted to a ski instructor who was on his day off and he gave us a 5 min lesson of how to get started! We had a go on the flatter areas and made our way down the easier slope. Most of it was a fun challenge and after many stacks was enjoying it still- but at the bottom there was a massive giant slope and we both got really frustrated! I kept getting stuck in the thick bumpy bits of the snow but didn't want to go on the hard bits! Did some massive stacks and slid around all over the place. It was really hot with a jacket and a hoodie so took the jacket off but got a bit wet! Rode up the gondola again and the ski lift up to near the top. Was an awesome view but freezing up there!! We took some happy snaps and caught the lift back down because it looked a bit difficult for us first timers!! We made a snowman near the gondola and had another brief go on the medium sloped runs and then had to head down to the village. I wanted more time!!! Said bye to my snow buddy and I headed on the bus back to Vancouver.
The city was buzzing- the HUGE playoff game for the Canucks - the ice hockey team was on. Everyone was wearing the royal blue shirts and the stadium was on my skytrain ride home so was busy! I got back to Karen and Daves where they almost were ready to watch it- I went and got some subway for tea and walked back to their house. It was funny because most of the subway was the same except it was 'tomATEoes' not 'tomARToes' and 'peppers' not 'capsicum'. The guy next to me asked for tomatoes with an Aussie pronunciation so I felt better!! Haha!
Today I had another early morning because I didn't know what time people were getting picked up from the hostel! So got there at 8 but it wasn't till 8:45. Sat around and waited for awhile before getting on the bus. We headed through 'downtown eastside' where instantly you could see why it has yhe reputation it does! So many dodgy looking characters and poverty/drugs. Once past that into normal 'neighbourhoods' we were near Karen and Daves- I should've got picked up out there! We got onto the highway which is apparently the longest in the world- stretches throughout Canada right up to Newfoundland-7000km in length! It was pretty scenery out through BC but a few holdups on the highway for roadworks in time for the victoria day long weekend this weekend and for the summer. Stopped at Bridal Veil falls and at Hope for lunch. We covered about 500km today so was lots of driving!!! Passed through mountains, and drier landscapes that look much like home except we have gum trees not pines!
Got to Shuswap Lake and went to the hostel at Scotch creek. There was a big spa there but in general for $30/night the whistler hostel was much better! Think I've been spoilt now! Went for a walk down to the lake with an Aussie, two Dutch, a Swiss and a Pom! Took some pics, and skimmed some rocks. It was a nice setting, but every four years they have a massive influx of salmon and they die on the shore so there were salmon bones and skin everywhere! Fortunately they had passed the stinky stage!
I think I realise why I never do tours!! There are a few people that piss me off. But I'm generally not a tolerating person of annoying habits!! Two old Australian couples joined the tour this morning which seems bizarre to me.. I reckon if you had the right group it'd be one big party- but I'm pretty glad its not actually!! Saving me some money and I'd probably rather have a few coronas in Mexico or party in Rio anyway!
Some of the others went and had a fire on the beach but everyone else was happy doing nothing- I wanted to walk down there but they had to come back anyway bcos you're not allowed fires after 10pm! just sat around and used wi-fi and went to bed!
