Every weekday morning at 6:45 a.m. my friend Rhoda and I leave the Theology Residence and head to the UWC Biokinetics Clinic for what we call, "Bio Boot Camp". We used to call it "Gareth's Boot Camp" after our drill sergeant, Gareth Smithdorf, but last week a second sergeant emerged from ranks (really, he returned from being out from a broken leg), so now we have 2 master planners, motivators, and gentlemen who I'm sure get a kick out of us "older" women stepping, lunging, squatting, lifting, pushing, and pulling.
There are many sighs, hesitancies, and at times, dirty looks from us participants, but the smiles, laughs, and good feelings always outweigh the grumbles and more important, we always return for another round.
We are a mighty group of 5-6 university staff members (and Rhoda is a master's student in human rights law). Each day we arrive, the door is always open and the lights in the main facility are always on, but at times it takes the sound of the warm-up bikes or treadmills to wake our cat-napping sergeants (bless them for getting up early every morning with us). They always eventually come out of their dark offices to set up our adult exercise playground with steps, balls, mats, weights, and the like.
Thank you Gareth and Ghafoer for the encouraging "Come on ladies" in your thick Capetonian accent! I look forward to tomorrow.
For the rest, I will keep you posted on our progress.
Stay Well,
Christy
