Sabadee!!!
After a hideously hungover eight hour bus journey around Loa's windy mountains we arrived in Luang Prabang, UNESCO World Heritage Site. A hotpot of French colonial architecture with temples, restuarants and markets galore. We finally found a guesthouse, run by a permanently high Jack Sparrow, right near the Mekong river. We both ate water buffalo steak for our tea, a Lao speciality YUM!
The next day we met Kate and Ged, who we were tubing with in Vang Vieng, and decided to visit a waterfall (the name is in Alex's journal at out Guesthouse!) a very bumpy hour's ride in a tuk tuk. The waterfall was stunning, and the pools surrounding a bright turqouise colour, close to the fake water in Disneyworld and good fun to swing into! We passed a Tiger and Bear reserve on the walk back which rescued ill treated animals in Lao and surrounding countries.
The night market in Luang Prabang was a major hit and we cunningly walked though it at closing time to get the best deals, Alex bought a gorgeous hand made jewellery box and Lucy haggled on some jewellery...cheaper than Primark would you believe!!
We decided to book a one day trek as we were concsious of our time running out in Lao so we crawled out of bed at 6.45am to start our atcion packed day. First on the list....ELEPHANT TREKKING! Our elephant, who we named Veronica, was a bit of a cheeky lass breaking away from the group and annoying the mahut, although he was constantly texting while trying to control her!
After a tearful goodbye to Veronica, who was stuffing her face with bananas (our kinda girl) we set off on a two hour trek to a village in the mountains. Eighty families inhabited the village which was built of small wooden huts on stilts. Our last stop was another waterfall, which we gracefully slid and fell into but the cool water refreshed us for our boat trip across the Mekong River back to the Elephant Sanctuary.
An early start at 5.20am on Sunday for our 36 hour bus journey to Hanoi.....a whole entry dedicated to this magical experience to come!
