Had a quiet morning, then headed to the on-site gym. Spent some time "working out" (seeing how fast we could run and testing our strength…) on the machines. Ethan spent ages on the rowing machine (I think that's what it was…).
Then headed out to get coffee and take our time to get to the MCG for the footy. We were going to catch the trams but were too full, so we made our way on foot. Stopped for coffee and hot chocolate. I thought it odd that there were so many people making their way to the footy already - then I realised I had recorded the time in WST, and the game was 2 hours earlier than I was expecting. Fortunately, we really weren't too worried about getting there for bounce-down and did eventually get there about 10 min late.
That said, the "general admission" tickets access to seats was a complete shambles! En-mass, we were sent to stands that were completely full, so people were going up and back, and it was complete chaos. They ended up opening some narrow sketchy accessway where it seemed we walked most of the way around the stadium to get access to seats. It was seemingly not intended as a public thoroughfare with a small door entry to cram thousands (or many hundreds) of people through, then walk along a narrow wooden corridor with no exits, signage, or any way to get out in an emergency… which then took us to an area where there were seats. It turned out there were heaps of free seats - so no idea why such a shambles… Clearly an old stadium with some poor planning…
By the time we got seats, the first quarter had almost finished. The home team (Hawks) didn't do well - in fact, didn't score a single goal in the first half of the game! While they improved in the second half, they were well and truly beaten by Carlton. As the home team did so poorly, the atmosphere probably wasn't what it could be. I found that Optus Stadium was better (admittedly, there were only 66,337 people at the game - although looking back at the MCG stats, isn't too bad).
After the game, we joined the huge cues to the train and caught the train out to Croxton, and had dinner at Welcome to Thornbury - where we went in 2017 (10 Apr 2017). They have live music and food trucks, so had burgers - although I got caught out - ordered a Fried Chicken burger - when I got it, I noted to Ethan that it seemed a little odd and the worst chicken I'd ever had - turns out it was a vegan chicken burger!!!! This was not mentioned in the title or description (ordering is via an app) - but as a small footnote that it was vegan! No idea why you can call a vegan burger a Chicken burger…
Caught the tram back to Melbourne, went past Woollies to get some veggies (and dessert…) then back to the accommodation. The step count was only 10K but felt like a lot more!
