Today, we ran in a marathon!
Well, sort of. The Disney Marathon was being run today through the Disney Parks. We went to Animal Kingdom and had to dash through breaks in the stream of runners a few times until they all got through this leg of the marathon. No one minded. The kids decided our mid-racer dash counted as "running in a marathon!"
It was quite a fun, carnival atmosphere, with the runners, many of them in Disney themed outfits, being cheered by all the Disney Cast Members along the route. Their enthusiasm was infectious; you couldn't help but to clap and cheer the runners too. One funny moment was watching the Disney Cast Members wave runners through the Fast Pass line on the Expedition Everest roller coaster so they could ride the coaster and rejoin the marathon!
Speaking of the Everest roller coaster - it was Matthew's favourite of the day. I went on it with him on his second time around, and I must say I loved it too!
Other highlights of the day included a 40 minute version of Finding Nemo, the Musical; the Dinosaur ride, the safari (a better tour than Busch Gardens, we thought), the Kali Rapids (everyone, bar Siobhan, got soaked), The Festival of the Lion King, the Primeval Whirl roller coaster, and the Boneyard playground.
This park is only open until 5:00pm, in order to keep the animals stress free I suppose. The two youngest were exhausted by 3:00pm, so we took that as our cue to leave before they had meltdowns. This means we left before the Parade - in fact, we haven't made the Parade at any of the Disney Parks yet, but we still have Magic Kingdom left to go.
We have to admit, Joe (age 4) and Imogen (age 7), have been such troopers. Joe is game enough to try anything and would happily follow his daredevil older brother onto any of the roller coasters, but is often left on the bench due to height restrictions. Still, he's accepted this with good grace and no tantrums. They've both also had to keep up with everyone else, walking for miles in crowds, stand in queues, being too small to see anything but strangers' legs, wait for meals, and sleep in a strange bed. What great kids!
