Whilst talking to Nidhi, I learned a lot about being a student in India, traditions and ways of Indian life, some of which i've mentioned below:
-Everyone has mobiles, with fb and whatsapp on!
-Maitreyi college, is an all girls college, part of Delhi University
-They pay £60 per year for university fees, cheap!
-The college has lots of societies, but numbers are limited, so they have interviews in order to get into the societies.
-All the students are very future focused, and know exactly what they want to do in the future
-All students had to be interviewed to be on the programme
-All the students want to visit the UK
-When drinking from a bottle, Indians don't touch the mouth of a bottle when drinking it.
-Nidhi has a younger brother and lives in North India, within the mountains which is a 6hr bus ride away where it is a lot cooler, hence why she doesn't like the Delhi heat! She lives near where 2 rivers meet ) the blue on and the dark brown one) which eventually formes the ganges. She wishes to work for the forestry commission back in the mountains (home), she misses her family much and visites ever 2 months or so. She would also love to visit Goa to see the beach and the sea, she has also never seen snow! She also mentors another younger student in social studies for some extra cash.
-Some students thought that we could bribe the universities in Uk to let us in and study there!
-Due to modernism, nidhi chooses not to wear a traditional Indian Saari, her mother does not wear one either.
-In their education system instead of having SATS, GCSE's etc, they simply have pre-school then year 1 to year 12, makes sense! (With tests each year)
-Their 'sumer holiday' is may to June, but their education year I don't think starts in June
-They all speak English very well!
-For a city to get 'city' status in India it requires a population of 1,000,000
-There are a lot of students who want to work in the military after graduation, because in India it is a requirement to have a degree before you can work for the military!
-It hardley ever rains in Delhi!
-I need to improve my art work in order to produce half decent Henna designs!
More fun facts are sure to follow!
