When I said the first things I did in Queenstown was have a subway and ferg burger - I lied. The first thing we did was go and get Harry Potter. It had come out when we were in Wanaka and the only bookshop there had sold out when I went. So imagine my relief when there was a whole stack in Queenstown! 5 of us strolled in and grabbed them walking out with huge smiles plastered to our faces!
Before I describe my time in Queenstown there are a few things you must understand about the place:
a)It is a ski town in winter so you must look cool at all times -especially if you're a boarder like moi
b)Ferg Burger is sacred and must not be looked down upon
c)Everyone has to do at least one extreme activity otherwise you are deemed a retard!
Ok, got that? Good!
Well the first day was spent doing the necessary - reading HP -and chilling.
Tuesday was Nevis time - Now, Nevis is a 134m bungy and is now officially the biggest one in the world after on in South Africa was closed when someone died! It is bloody scary! However because Lou-Lou is brave and nuts she did it twice! I will leave the rest for the DVD to explain. Me and Claire decided this was such an achievement that we hit the world bar and its teapots rather early! Nice fruit juice that is! His evening I bumped into Good time gazza who is now a boucer at the world bar! Ha weird eh? No 4 of people I've met from home-well sort of -meribel counts for 2.
3rd day in Queenstown was another chill day finishing HP and watching rubbish movies taking the piss out of the English (Matchpoint). Me and Nick did take a walk around the lake though - then it started to rain! I got to have a swing in the kiddies playground though!
Thursday bought the start of our little adventure on the bottom bus. Queenstown to Dunedin, the worlds steepest road plus an athlete that runs up and down it 30 times a day! Nutter! A very sad story behind it all though. Dunedin is probably the only other city apart from Christchurch on the South Island and so w took as stroll around taking in the sights - the uni, art gallery, Speights Brewery, Robbie Burns, Cadburys chocolate factory etc.
Dunedin -Invercargill:
A day through the Catlins and lots of animals. First stop Nugget point where a seal colony resides. Second stop a search for Sealions on he beach, however we found them earlier than expected. As we were walking through the long grass to get to the beach there was mighty roar and a sea lion popped up just metres from us - very scary as they can be quite vicious. We saw many more - our driver being a lot braver than we were. Then we stopped to try and spot some whales having no luck apart from the 'Louise shark' a.k.a. seaweed! Last stop of the day was at the fossilized forest - what looks like a burnt forest which is actually all made out of stone - fantastic! Here we waited patiently or the Penguins to return home and we managed to see 12 yellow eyed penguins (the ones from Madagascar) waddle, jump and squeal their way back to heir ness for the night - spectacular experience. We even saw some of them fighting and chasing each other -very funny!
This evening we had a nice hearty meal at the ale house with our driver - PIE! PIE! PIE!
Invercargill -Te Anau
Awesome day! We stopped at a local farm and I got to shear a sheep, play with the farm dogs and drive the tractor thing! Great fun although I thought I mite kill the sheep - shearing is a lot harder than it looks! I was at this farm that I was challenged to make a noise out of a shepherd whistle - I'm still carrying I around now having had not much success! It was also this day that we stopped at Lake Manapouri (apparently the most beautiful lake in Nz) but none of us got out the bus as we were all so tired and it as raining! Oops! Te Anau had absolutely nothing there but we had to stay here the night to catch the Milford Sound bus he next morning.
Milford Sound
A very long day! But good all the same. We had a 2 hour drive to Milford sound of which we weren't sure if the road would be open as it had been closed due to avalanches the past few days! But it was so all was ok. The drive itself is pretty cool going through a tunnel cut out of the mountain and through valleys surrounded by massive snow-capped mountains. When we arrived we had a 2 hour cruise where we got up close and personal with the waterfalls! W headed out to sea where it got a bit rough and just admired the views - with a cup of FREE tea/coffee! lol We stopped at the underwater observatory which was good getting to see all the animals 8 metres down but inside! He best was the black water coral which is actually white! After this it was the long 5 hour journey back to good old Queenstown - home sweet home!
