Day 11: Lake Bled.
Today has been an interesting day...
This morning was another early start as I had to get the 08:29 train from Vienna's south station. I made it to the station with the usual hour to spare (I can't help it). While I was waiting for the train I notice groups and groups of school children (probably around 15 years old) piling onto the platform. There were hundreds of them! Just my luck they ended up being on my train. Not only that, they had reserved 8 of the 11 carriages. After walking practically the whole stretch of the train I managed to find an unreserved seat. Unfortunately though being irritating teenagers on a school trip they spent the whole journey walking up and down the train, yelling at each other. Despite of all that the scenery was probably the best yet (we were travelling through mountainous countryside and villages). This time I had to change stations in south Austria, which was fairly easy, and my second train took less than an hour. When I finally got to Bled I took a taxi to my hostel (I was tired and I wasn't really sure where I was going). The hostel, the smallest one yet, is located above the George Best Bar (random I know!). After checking in and leaving my stuff in my room I made the short walk up a forest path to Bled's castle. The castle overlooks the lake and surrounding villages and is a must see in Bled.
After seeing the lake from above I headed down the hill to the town centre. I leisurely walked alone the edge of the lake for a while, taking pictures of the scenery (and the numerous ducks). After a while it started to rain (my idea of spending the next two days sunbathing has been well and truly squashed) so I headed back to the hostel, stopping at a local shop to buy food for tomorrow's breakfast.
I am currently sitting in the hostel bar drinking a pint of fanta and beer (a lot nicer than it sounds), every so often getting a free "must try" shot from the bar tender.
So there you have my first day in Bled, by far my most relaxed (and drunken) one yet.
More tomorrow. Watch this space.
