Day 15: Liechtenstein.
Well today I have have visited the smallest country on my trip so far.
This morning was another early start, leaving the beautiful Salzburg on the 8am train to Buchs, Switzerland. When I got to Buchs I met a really nice girl who was getting the bus into Liechtenstain (Buchs is the nearest train station) and helped me with directions to the hostel. When I got to the hostel it was deserted. Apparently (according to the cleaner) check in is not til 5pm (I know, how ridiculous). I left my suitcase in one of the lockers (at least they had some) and headed into Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein. The youth hostel is actually in the middle of Vaduz and Schaan (the biggest city in the country). After about a twenty minute walk I made it to Vaduz. Since I couldnt get a map from the hostel I headed to the tourist information centre. The girl working there was really nice and told me about interesting things I could do in the town. While I was there I also got my passport stamped and sent a postcard (look out for that Steven and Helen). After doing the main things tourists do when in Liechtenstein, I went and found somewhere to have lunch. For the first time since starting my travels I actually had a salad, it was a really nice change from all those dumplings. After lunch I went to the, very small, postal museum (Liechtensetin has over 100 years worth of stamps). On the advice of the girl in the tourist information centre I then took the toursit train around the town. Its a really cute way to see Vaduz, especially the old town and the castle (and since its such a small place, the whole trip only took 35 minutes). After my tour of Vaduz I decided to head back to the hostel. At one point I thought I was the only person staying there, but then a Japanese family checked in too (thank god, I felt like I was staying in the hotel in The Shining).
So there you have my very brief stay in Liechtenstein. Apart from the slightly strange hostel, Liechtenstein is actually a really cute place. Its literally nestled right in between the mountains. I would definitely recommend going there for a day trip. Tomorrow its off again, this time to Switzerland.
Watch this space.
